Sheriff88 Posted March 29, 2019 Posted March 29, 2019 When flying P-47 or Spitfire, if you use "Complex Engine Management" do you achieve better aircraft performance than set up using "Engine Auto Control"?
Ehret Posted March 29, 2019 Posted March 29, 2019 I wouldn't call it "complex" and yes - it's possible to gain performance using manual controls, usually.
336th_Porkie- Posted March 29, 2019 Posted March 29, 2019 yes, just being able to close the outlet flaps is a big difference.
dburne Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 Yes, best to take the time and learn to fly this way. Not too difficult.

And lately, due to the obvious, but only available on sessions where outside ( voyeuristic mode... ) views are allowed, I've also been optimizing engine performance trough leaning. When I do not know exactly what to set I look outside for the smoke trail, and try to clear it...
Sheriff88 Posted April 4, 2019 Author Posted April 4, 2019 Thanks I'll start with pitch & mixture and see how it goes.
CanadaOne Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 Was looking at a site about variable pitch propellers and lo and behold they are using a BOX video as a demonstration. http://hartzellprop.com/understanding-variable-pitch-propellers/
=475FG=_DAWGER Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 It is important to understand the difference between variable pitch propellers and constant speed propellers.

Redwo1f Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 Well, complex engine management has never been for me - just haven't been interested in that much "simulation" for my flight sims. I just want to be on complete equal terms with the AI (not an online- multiplayer at all) and figured auto-management would put it on exact equal footing (relatively speaking) - does it not? 1

You're practically always better of doing things yourself and turning all assists off.

Relatively speaking I would agree with your assessment. I share your lack of enthusiasm for complex engine management in my air combat simulation hobby. Learning the different CEM nuances of different airplanes is too much like work when all I really want to do is fly formation and blow sh*t up. Having written that, Psyrion isn’t wrong about noticeable, incremental performance boosts via CEM. The thing that stands out for me while letting the sim handle engine management, has been a greater use of Combat power just to stay in formation while enroute to or from the target. Bottom line I prefer the Normal difficulty engine management to Expert difficulty. But with the Hs-129 for example, CEM is noticeably better.
