Avyx Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Do I have a chance to find a clouds mod ? Maybe some settings - tips ? The default clouds look awful Thank you
rowdyb00t Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Check this out. Not a mod yet but HappyHaddock is working on fixing this and the sky as well. On the other hand, there is two mods I use to make the clouds much better. On this second one I prefer the NoiseAmp.zip. It’s at the end of this post 1
Beazil Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 What Rowdy said. I went looking for the thread, but I see he found it first. That mod looks amazing. I hope it works for VR and reduces the cloud issues with planes being "pixelated" against them. But even if not, it looks beautiful, the work Happy is working on, I mean. 1

Avyx Posted March 19, 2019 Author Posted March 19, 2019 (edited) Wow, thank you so much I don't like the new sky color, also Now I'm confused, I'm not sure which clouds mod I should install The " high quality clouds in low preset" wouldn't help, because I think I have a strong pc , no VR ( yet ) Edited March 19, 2019 by Avyx
rowdyb00t Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 (edited) The High quality clouds and low preset mod gives you a graphics preset CFG file that you can tweak all of your graphics settings with, many more options than the in game menu. I can’t remember exactly where it is located in your IL2 folder but if you download it open the zip file and see which files are inside of it that will help you locate this in your folder. I’m away from my PC now so I’m trying my best to explain this to you. The smoother clouds mod tweaks the cloud build files in the data/graphics/sky/summer and winter folders. I use the NoiseAmp.zip file which smooths the clouds out, So there is no stuttering affect. It works really well. I have both installed Edited March 19, 2019 by rowdyb00t
Avyx Posted March 19, 2019 Author Posted March 19, 2019 I don't want to open another thread, maybe someone could help me What about a mod like this ? The smoke ( damaged aircraft ) looks greenish. Is it possible to change this ? Thank you
crigby46 Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 The smoke/vapour colours are indicative of what you've hit. White would usually be coolant, most often water glycol mix. The greenish hue is fuel, the additives giving it that odd tint. Black smoke is everything that's bad, and most often indicative of a bad time in the near future. In reality of course you'd get a combination of different components emitting various smoke and vapour trails, but for the sake of not having to make a sim specifically for battle damage on a running engine, it's been simplified. Nonetheless, it still gives you a decent visual indication, and will allow you if you glance rearwards and see your own trails to make an educated guess as to what your biggest priority is before your gauges show much difference. 1
Avyx Posted March 22, 2019 Author Posted March 22, 2019 Thanks, crigby46 Could anyone tell me, please, what kind of clouds ( settings, time, etc ) is used here ? Between 0.41 - 0.43
Avyx Posted June 15, 2019 Author Posted June 15, 2019 I'd like to see something like that, for IL 2 BoX
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted June 15, 2019 Posted June 15, 2019 Here I am dreaming of pretty clouds. Then I remember, I only play MP. Such a shame, I wish they'd be available for that. Or at least, if we could use "High Clouds" when selecting "Balanced Preset".
LizLemon Posted June 15, 2019 Posted June 15, 2019 Making the clouds look better essentially involves rewriting a decent chunk of the cloud shaders. Besides fixing some of the issues with them, like how pixelated they can look, it also involves changing the lighting passes to make them more believable looking. But then once that is done you have the issue of the tonemapping used in game, which blows out highlights too much. So do you fudge the clouds so they aren't pure white most of the time, or do you change the tonemapper too? And if you do change the tonemapping, then you should probably change other stuff like the fog, skybox and lighting. Its a real pain in the......... 1

It has certainly been keeping me occupied for many many hours, but with perseverance there's not much that you can't make this game engine do. I've just put in another half day's work overhauling the overcast conditions, but as LizLemon says there's a lot that all needs changing you can't just tweak one file.

Rough cloud shapes are wrong, for the most part, in stock cloud maps. Almost all need to be redone. Need to add a pass to sharpen/distort the edges Ambient strength needs to be less on the bottom of the cloud Otherwise you get the idea. 1

Avyx Posted October 4, 2019 Author Posted October 4, 2019 Yes They look better than those cotton broken balls
PicksKing Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 31 minutes ago, Avyx said: Yes They look better than those cotton broken balls Just to clearify. With "cotton balls" I meant CoD. You would really prefer such 2d textures instead of volumetric clouds? I mean they do look good... for 2011, when the game was released but nowadays volumetric clouds are state of the art. The devs should only increase the cloud samples by default to get rid of that weird flickering.
Avyx Posted October 4, 2019 Author Posted October 4, 2019 Yes, I agree with you. But the devs don't This weird flickering looks ......weird
