VPC Warbrd grip or Moongost CM2 for desktop use

Hi!

Any experience with the WARBRD Grip from Virpil? It looks appealing to me as I have small hands and mongoost grip looks very big. Also it will be sitting on my desk, no mounts, so I figured it would be enough for me as I am afraid that the Moongost is too big for this use. I mostly play IL2 and some DCS but I will play the hell out of Star Citizen

I know it has less buttons and hats than mogoost but I think it will be enough for me, specially if I pair it with the Virpil throttle.

I am asking here because there is not much info about this grip so the main questions are:

  • Is the Moongost CM2 too big for desktop use?
  • Can someone explain its experience with the WARBRD grip in IL2?

Thanks in advance!

I don't have experience with it, but certainly the WarBRD was designed for desktop use.

Yes the Mongoos grip is fairly large ( I do have the T-50 Stick with Mongoos grip).

While the MongoosT-50/BE/CM/CM2 grip is quite long, the section you put your hand on it's not that big. Some people with bigger hands even complained that it's too small.

The total length makes it not that suitable for desktop use. But you should look into joystick mounts, no matter which grip you end up with, anyway.

WarBRD is the shortest grip made by Virpil (so far).

But they will announce a new grip this month. Better wait and see what kind of grip will that be.

T50 grip is too tall for desktop use, is for deskmount or "cockpit" use.

WarBRD grip - based on pictures will result similar in height to Warthog in desktop use - in a not very good ergonomic position but usable.

Functions wise is more than sufficient for IL-2:GB, DCS warbirds and less "tech" jets.

Grip follow the general layout of B-8 grip, but with a 4 way+push HAT in place of shoulder thumb button.

And have a button conveniently placed as "pink", perfect to be used as "shift" for other buttons/HAT's.

And in this video, T50 height compared with Warghog:

Using the VPC WarBRD Flightstick (base + grip) works very well as a desktop stick, a similar sort of height and hand rest position to the TM Warthog. I would suggest that the VPC MongoosT-50CM2 grip would be too tall to comfortably use as a desktop stick though!

Thanks guys! You really helped me a lot. I will be looking forward for the announcement from Virpil this month and see what are they announce, something like the WarBRD but with more buttons would be perfect for me but now that you guys mention it, maybe I must look into the mounts. I have the money burning in my hands and maybe will be better to get the Moongost CM2 with a mount, but now I worry about my desk chair which has arms. Wouldn't that be a problem? Also another concern I have is to know how convenient it is to have the mount if I usually play other games than sims and I have to remove them on a regular basis.

Once I went with a mounted stick setup I could never go back to desktop.

I have a desk chair with arms, presents no problem for me.

Once you have the stick assembly mounted to their desk mount, clamping it on and off the desk is quite quick and easy. I just leave mine plugged in and sitting on the floor on left side of my desk, when ready to do some flying I have it clamped on desk and ready to go very quickly.

The problem is not everyone is living in large flats with many rooms and a garage or in castles...I have my PC in living room (though its not a small room) and I cant afford to convert to simpit of any kind. I need to be low profile not only because of space but because of the design of the interior plus I dont want to explain WTF is this to my guests.

Thanks sir, you just made me spend 500 € for the desk mount, WarBRD Base, CM2 Grip in the near future. Next I will but the throotle.

By the way, what do you think about the WarBRD + desk mount? Any incompatibility? Clearance issues? It will go without extensions of course.

That is an issue for sure but I am lucky and have one room for the PC.

You will be fine, the desk mount can be adjusted to accommodate about any length of stick for comfort.

Personally I like the extensions myself but that is just me.

The WarBRD has a longer throw so extensions may cause some clearance issues.

That's great to know, I will go with mounts now. Thanks for clearing things up.

I know that WarBRD+extensions is a no-go in order to not have clearance issues.

:good:

Do you have a throttle, if so which one?

I am rocking a T16000M paired with MFG Crosswind pedals and I think that it is time to upgrade the hotas. Now I have to think which part should I prioritize and I think that the stick should come first as it is more critical in terms of precision. I will keep the T16000M specially for the stick so I can go dual in games like Star Citizen or Elite Dangerous but we will see how that goes with such different hardware.

I will get the 50 throotle for sure! But it will come 1-2 months later than the stick.

Ok - when at some point you do get a throttle you will want to desk mount it also for comfort if you are still using desk mount for the WarBRD.

Using a center mounted stick while throttle on desk can be uncomfortable reaching for throttle.

Thanks for the tip, of course everything has to go mounted. It is an extra cash to add but it will pay-off, for that I am sure. I will make the effort and buy everything at once in that case.

An inclined version of VPC deskmount is "on the way", so no more clearance issues with big extensions, or WarBRD base (~22º degress of movement).

For use their more short grip (WarBRD) is just matter of adjust support plate height:

Thanks for the input, that looks great. I think that I will use it without extensions for the moment, maybe in the future I consider other options. I will but the CM + WarBRD and no extensions.

Gladiator pro is 240mm tall. Its a max usable for desktop use IMHO. On top of that it has buttons and throttle on the base and still rocks metal gymbal mechanism and changeable cams and springs. Its by far the best allround solution for desktop virtual pilot. The problem is I dont see the intention of VKB to make gladiator pro mk3 and mk2 pro is discontinued....

Thanks for all of the information in this thread. I'm looking at my next base/grip setup (currently a vanilla Gladiator) and HOTAS and VIRPIL is making some awfully tempting products here.

The WarBRD grip I'm very interested in. It seems like a good compromise between lots of buttons and a decent size for desktop use.

An Gladiator PRO Mk.III will make sense if came with the new Kosmosima (basic) grip.

KG-12B grip was not a success, specially in this VR times.

Is OK'ish for a "entry-level" stick, like Gladiator "vanilla" -  although by their price, ~40/50% more than other "entry-level" sticks,  could offer something better than the old '4 buttons + POV HAT' formula.

Kg12 is the only ww2 style grip available. It makes sense in a joystick like gladiator pro which has many buttons on the base. Besides, you can always buy throttle separately which usually has many buttons.

"VR times"? Maybe in a rich part of the world...and vr is still far away from being perfect...

The KG12 grip is lacking in buttons and hat switches, but it's ergonomic and the VKB one is only $45 (that would be ~50 euro with VAT).

It can work, if you have enough buttons/hat switches on the throttle handle (or on the left stick for space sims).

I'm curious ... for anyone with the WarBRD base. How does it compare to others in terms of stiffness (set by cams I suppose) and sensor precision. Does it move smoothly? When I went from my old X-52 to the VKB Gladiator it was a revelation at how much smoother and more precise a stick could be.

Placing an order as we speak! Going with the VPC MongoosT-50CM2 Grip paired with the VPC WarBRD Base (I don't do space sims so not getting the CosmoSim Cams).

My MS FF2 was a great stick - but I think it's dying (...moment of silence please). She brought me tons of hours of both joy and anguish - exactly like my wife and I love them both dearly! :joy:

--- Update: I put a hold on this purchase. Apparently, Vipril wants a bank transfer because it's a per-order item LOL (yeah - I am going to go ahead and say hell no to that). 90+ days minimum shipping date i.e June  LOL!
