Georgio Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 ...they certainly live up to their reputation. First mission with the new build for the interception mission, shot down two LaGGs with no problem then set to work on the IL-2's. I must have chased one IL-2 for about 10k pouring everything I had into him and he just kept flying and this with the 20mm gunpods as well. I know they're tough but this was just wrong especially as both LaGGs went down with single bursts. 1
=38=Tatarenko Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 After shooting down 2 LaGGs you may well have been on MG's only.
SimFreak Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 I find that IL-2 are very easy to shoot down. Just aim properly. example
Finkeren Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Hmmm either your shooting was shoddy or you were simply unlucky and didn't hit anything vital. I have downed lots of IL-2's yesterday. Most after 1 or 2 bursts. They are certainly tougher than the LaGGs and seem nearly impervious to MG fire (as you'd expect) but a few cannon hits to the wings, tail section or engine is still a death sentence. 1
6S.Manu Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 The FXs are great, amazing.. but the DM is weird: I hope it's still alpha. 1
Georgio Posted February 22, 2014 Author Posted February 22, 2014 After shooting down 2 LaGGs you may well have been on MG's only. No I used Mg's only for the LaGGs as I knew I was going to need the cannons for the IL-2, both planes went down with single bursts. I was getting decent hits with all three cannons on the IL-2 and it just kept flying; the reason it crashed in the end was because I shot away it's port aileron and it turned and couldn't correct so banked into the deck, so even then I didn't really destroy it in the air.

All my shots were from directly astern, I didn't want to try any high shots I was just interested in how well the cannons did from that angle.
BeastyBaiter Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) They are tough, but 20mm's bring them down reliably at any angle I've used (direct 6, high deflection diving in and slashes from the sides). Typically my first pass is crippling, a second finishes them off. I've shot down all 4 IL2's and the 2 lagg's in one flight without the help of my AI buddy using gunpods. =38=Tatarenko Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 I just did that fight using standard loadout and Il-2's go down easy. Too easy in fact, as I like flying IL-2's 1
Gutermann Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Well the il2 we have is the one whit extern wing panel and the end of the fuselage made of wood that where highly vulnerable too canon fire.

ParaB Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Same here, shot down 3 IL2s and 2 LaGGs on my 1st try with standard loadout, and I'm not a particular great shot. In fact I thought it was a bit too easy.
senseispcc Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Read Hartman's diaries and you shall notice that the IL2 is one of the most difficult planes to shoot down . You should try to follow is lead and try to hit the ventral radiator on the IL2.
arjisme Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 All my shots were from directly astern, I didn't want to try any high shots I was just interested in how well the cannons did from that angle. You should post a video showing what you are seeing.
von_Tom Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Ventral radiator or into the underside of the tail as it should fall off. Hood
Venturi Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 They go down just fine, blew a wing in half with a short burst the other day. Shoot them from astern with MGs, to watch the tracers bounce off in every which direction... glorious weapon effects, and the damage model feels right to me.
Nil Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Finally managed to take them all out with default loadout. The Ai 109 is totally useless! He attacked one of the laggs and it started smoking, then the AI went on doing nothing constructive, while I took out all others, only to have the lightly smoked one come up behind me!! I thought he were dead.Managed to put my last 4 cannonrounds into him, only to darken the smoke.Went to land, and watched the poor Lagg struggle for 5 minutes over my airfield, until his engne gave up and he bailed. (my wingman actually made it and landed!)The wingman AI is terrible atm, he's shouting for at least a minute about attacking fighter at X position, and dies most of the time
Georgio Posted February 22, 2014 Author Posted February 22, 2014 Nice shooting SimFreak, I guess I was just tired last night or something please excuse my aimless ramblings. It just must be me....
Finkeren Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 It just must be me.... Or perhaps it just shows the depth of the DM. From time to time I'll get into a fight, where I just seem to empty my entire ammo supply into an opponent that usually goes down in 1 - 2 bursts. If you by chance just fail to hit anthing vital, the bugger just isn't gonna drop.
ScotsmanFlyingscotsman Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Georgio, I went after the il-2's with basic set up, got smoke but no kills Took the cannons next trip and when the il-2 fills you view, spectaculare success....big bang no il-2 I read an account of Werner Moelders who demonstrated to a rookie that the place to aim was the radiator, or the petrol cap behind the gunner...THE PETROL CAP....Just how close do you have to be to see the petrol cap. I have had mixed success, lots of hits on the il-2, lots of me mishandlng the 109 at low level and buying a plot of land, bu they can be brought down.I used to chase them in the original il-2 then learned Moelders trick and they will explode. Quite a sim eh!
