Blitzen Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 (edited) I just saw a vid on YouTube concerning the in development Rift S. Its looks like the ideal replacement for my current Rift.production looks a ways off but I'm wondering of more tech savvy people here have any thoughts...most importantly will it work for BoX? dburne Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 While there has been no official word on the details from Oculus, apparently some have found references to the S in the current Oculus code. Most is just speculation right now, but sounds like it may be coming this year.
Dagwoodyt Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 The S sounds underwhelming but I see this vid more as an advertisement for the Quest, clickbait. I would not be surprised if the "S" never materializes.

Wouldn't shock me, not only are the rumored specs completely underwhelming but their rumored price target of 300 bucks does little to instill it will be any type of a quality headset. The biggest issue to me is the supposed removal of the hardware IPD, software ipd adjustment is garbage.
Alonzo Posted March 6, 2019 Posted March 6, 2019 I'm really sick of these 12 minute YouTube videos that have zero content. Here's what the video says the Rift S *might* have: Outside-in tracking, maybe hand tracking, probably same controllers as Quest USB-C connectivity Audio built into the headband, same as Go Screen and lenses update, at least as good as the Go Software-only IPD He's guessing at Odyssey+ / Vive Pro resolution Total speculation the price will be $250-$300 There's absolutely nothing new in the video that the original leak/website didn't have. The *only* actual information we have is that there is a Rift S in the codebase and that it has software IPD. Everything else is speculation. (I'm not bashing you for posting the video, just that the guy in the video has zero information and has made a 12 minute speculation video).

I seem to remember that YouTube videos over ten minutes provide better monetization for the creator somehow. Hence you see a lot of videos of 10-12 minutes in length. As to the content itself... pretty sure all this stuff is just speculation for now.

Yeah this is why you see so many 10:03 timed videos, it's for the ad revenue or some crapola. I almost try not to watch any that are that length cause it just shows the creator of the vid is doing it for the money.
dburne Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 Rift S may be coming sooner than we might think. https://variety.com/2019/digital/news/rift-update-coming-store-shortages-1203156646/ Also apparently Oculus is making some changes to their product page to allow room for more products... Time will tell.
Blitzen Posted March 7, 2019 Author Posted March 7, 2019 Very interesting...I'll be holding on to my Rift a while longer it appears...
Dagwoodyt Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 I suspect that an "S" product would follow the Odyssey "+" model. That would mean slashing production costs and implementing a marketing campaign to convince prospective buyers that an "S" is going to have a new "game changing" feature. That would help to distract potential buyers from recognizing they are purchasing a downgraded hmd. It would also help to counter a perception that the company is abandoning high cost of entry pc users.

Oculus was developing the Half Dome technology for their next PC-VR unit with some very high ambitions. Apparently at some point the powers to be decided it was going to take a while longer than anticipated to get the tech to where it would run like say the Rift. So rather than waiting it out they have elected to release an improved Rift in the meantime, with the Half Dome tech still in their long term plans. What these improvement will be we do not know as they have not revealed anything yet officially. Again the above is just my thoughts based on everything I have read over the months. It will certainly be interesting when they do reveal what they have planned for it.
BornToBattle Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 Built in sensors? Yay. How about increased resolution/less screen door effects and higher frame rates?
JonRedcorn Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 (edited) We already have those things, it's called the odyssey plus. The image quality is absolutely breathtaking. Now if I could just somehow jam the internals inside the rift that'd be even better! I was actually looking at the two headsets yesterday thinking, how the heck can I put this odyssey inside the rift, I won't dare attempt it, even just getting the strap mechanism from the rift onto the odyssey would make it the best headset in the world. Understood, but I was just referencing what the OP had in topic aka Rift S. BUUUUTTT...I hear ya...taking the best of each headset and coming up with one that would incorporate the best of everything under one hood. And it’s not just VR headsets either. Sometimes I really wonder if these engineers really do live literally inside the confines of their little boxes. They can’t seem to see outside of them at all at times. Rift engineer 1: “Well, really since we don’t really care to investigate consumer feedback at all, let’s just throw in a couple of onboard sensors and go with software for the peripheral thingy and call it a day.” Rift engineer 2: “Yeah, sounds good. Oh, I gotta head over to marketing as Zuck said to target the price to the $600 pricing model they had discussed.” Rift engineer 1: “Cool dude. Hey, meet ya at Subway?” Rift engineer 2: “Right on!”
Blitzen Posted March 9, 2019 Author Posted March 9, 2019 You know I bought Odessey plus last Christmas & gave it a try...maybe a try that wasn’t long enough, because I just couldn’t see it advantages. It did eliminate a lot of the SDE but I couldn’t get that much in the way of improvement in clarity for my money.I wasn’t crazy about the interface with my PC & game. Now I freely admit that I may not have “fine-tuned “ to the degree it needed , but I plead there was no way at the time ( when it was newly released) of figuring out how to do so, and I’m not bright enough to have figured a work around...so I took it back & returned to the Rift, which I still use. I decided just to wait before moving to the newest generation of VR, or until owners of the newest VR devices came in reviews with them. These are now coming in as are advanced notices of future devices. I was very impressed with Rift & Oculus support of same. Just opening the box it came in and its easy install plus its hand controllers was seamless- a delightful experience.I wonder if there is an “S” model that it will be just as easy a transition, something I didn’t find with the Samsung Product and from what I have read about Vive and other new VR headsets is that they all need work ( new lenses with Vive or headphones or specific settings) to get them to interface with Great Battles...read I’ve got to call a friend with more knowledge of PC’s than I have to come over & figure them out. I am really looking forward to getting rid of SDE , better clarity and a wider field of view ( esp for Flying Colors,) and I hope someday soon we’ll see a post from someone saying Eureka I’ve found it and its under $1000.00!!! Hopefully before the entire versions of BoB,FC & TC are released .I guess I muddle along with Oculus Rift until then.

The performance isn't there though. Setup couldn't have been easier, took less than 5 minutes to get the proper thing downloaded for steam, oculus setup is 10x as long and 10x the pain in the ass. It's not even close. Image quality is highly dictated by the resolution being pushed the headset, at low res it looks no better than a rift, with the proper res and settings it looks like your watching a monitor. What I consider acceptable performance seems to be the exception on here though since I am apparently the only one striving for 90fps. Edited March 9, 2019 by JonRedcorn

I see they are available at under $400.00- is it worth giving them another try or just waiting? Is there a how to site available to walk me through a better install designed particularly for BoX?

The performance just isn't there. Unless you think playing at 50fps in a headset designed to run at 90 is good enough.
