Since perfectly accurate front lines are problematic so too is perfectly accurate basing.  I solve the problem by not worrying too much about it.  Establish the lines and then locate units based on that, with one eye towards history and the other towards playability.  

 

Not helpful if you really want perfect accuracy, but I would note that the position of the lines has a crucial impact on basing.  If your bases are perfect but your lines are not you could end up with a field on the wrong side.
