Surprised about DR1

I’m a little surprised about how often I manage to cause fuel leaks when attacking DR1’s.  It’s tank is relatively small and placed in front of the pilot.  It would be difficult to quantify how often the pilot is injured in any particular attack that also hits the fuel tank where the only obvious visible result is the fuel leak.  I just find it odd that, given a typical stern or stern and above attack that the pilot or guns don’t absorb more of the damage.
