Fascinating.

I realise these aircraft were perhaps not in the best of condition when this film was shot, but it certainly lends credence to the 'dirtier is better' approach to aircraft skins argument over on the other thread.

Look at the state of the airfield!

I'm inclined to think it is a pile of bits from at least three aircraft at 1:45, but I'd ( very ) tentatively identify the forward fuselage and wing assembly in the foreground as being an Albatros CX. Possibly. Maybe. Perhaps.

Actually, I've looked again and I'm going to plump for it being an Albatros CX.

The second large piece of wing wreckage might be a DVa, but that would be complete guesswork.

Again, I think we are looking at three aeroplanes here, but the resolution, angle and exposure make it hellishly difficult to see.

I think the one at 1:34 and 4:38 is a Junkers J.1 the il2 of WW1

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers Stephan

Dead on, Stephan, that's exactly what it is.

That's what I thought, although I really think they were in a state of abandon, with the liveries over-pained, etc. I can't believe they were taking off in some of those airfield conditions as well.

The site is now an IKEA store. Progress.

Lots more photos of the same aerodrome on the Australian War Memorial site, search 'Bickendorf' on the page.

It is hart to identify the rubble. But it seems to have a machine gun that was supposed to be front mounted.

Junkers j1 is not biplane right?

For me it seems that its a Roland DVI, but probably not?

You might well be right.

Slightly greater angle on the forward strut, and the angle of the under carriage legs looks right for your identification, too.

I came across this the other day. Worth sharing. From the Imperial War Museum (GB).

Huns surrendering battleplanes - British airman takes a trip in a Fokker (could not embed).

The irony being that the British learned nothing from evaluating these planes. For almost two decades thereafter, they continued to regard wire-braced biplanes as front line fighters. Fokker could have sent their blueprints to England during the war and it would have had no effect.

I'm just using this thread as an excuse to watch this marvellous footage over and over again. An excellent find, SeaWolf!
