Some Winter of 39-40 shots with Yaks standing in for Hurricanes.

Someone made a collection of missions to simulate the Japanese attacks on Singapore, called 'The Last Stand In Singapore',  and included these (or similar) skins so maybe that is where he got them.

The Winter of 1939-40 was, actually, a time of inactivity. So much so, that the British press jokingly called it "The Sitzgreig." Both England and France made a big show of gearing for war. French troops massed along the French German border and England rushed troops to France. Then they did......nothing. The only place making the headlines was out at sea, the war against the U-Boats and the hunting down of the battleship, Graf Spee,
It wasn't until Germany was on the move again, on May 10th, when Hitler invaded the low countries, that the war began again in earnest.

September 39 to May 40, known generally as "the Phony war" both sides gearing up for battles as as you say the only real action was Uncle Karl letting the U-boats off the leash (wolpack see?) and the Graf Spee along with a few skirmishes and notably the sinking of the HMS Couragous.
