TWC_Ace Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 (edited) I have i5 7600 (4.1 ghz on turbo), gtx 1060 3gb, 2x8gb ddr4 2400 and ssd hdd. IL2 GB runs great on 1200p (60hz monitor) on high ( 70km horizon 2x landscape, no ssao, 4xaa, vsync on). Im not using VR. I was thinking on upgrading my gpu and 1660ti looks promising..but...would I see any improvements in the game considering my other components...Would my cpu be bootleneck if I buy 1660ti? 1660ti sits somewhere around 1070 performance.. JonRedcorn Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 I am sure you'd see a bit of a gain, the 1060 you have with the 3gb of vram is a real dog and will hold you back in the future.
Seb71 Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 It would be a gain. But not enough for me. I would skip a turn. Wait for the next generation of graphics cards and re-evaluate then. 1

Wait for the next generation of graphics cards and re-evaluate then. By that time I would buy the whole new rig. The thing is, now I cant set landscape distance to more than 2x since Il2 eats max 2.9gb of vram at 2x and at 3x and 4x it eats more vram than I have. Fps wise Im ok....
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 It's a tough call. With the 1660 Ti, you'd be able to increase the settings to maximum. The CPU bottleneck really depends on the situation, but 4.1 GHz isn't bad outside VR. If you foresee a big upgrade in the near future involving a high-res monitor, I'd wait. If not, the 1660 Ti would probably serve you well for quite some time at 1200p.
TWC_Ace Posted February 25, 2019 Author Posted February 25, 2019 The only issue I have is will my cpu bootleneck the 1660ti at 1200p. For now I cant afford a new monitor with higher resolution.
Rjel Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 (edited) I just order an MSI 1660Ti yesterday. I should have it installed tomorrow. The reviews I've read so far sound like it's a good bang for the buck compromise. I'll post some numbers this weekend. I don't do VR either and likely will wait at least one more generation by which time hopefully I will be ready for a new build. Edited February 28, 2019 by Rjel
TWC_Ace Posted February 28, 2019 Author Posted February 28, 2019 (edited) On 15 of March the 1660 6gb (regular one, not Ti) will be released and should be around 10% faster than 1060 6GB. That one I would buy and it will be enough for ultra settings at 1200p (probably for 1440p also) and 60 Hz/fps. 1660ti is 5-8% faster than 1070. Edited February 28, 2019 by blackram
JonRedcorn Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 You could probably find a used 1060 6gb card for super cheap. Or just spend the 250 on the 1660ti.
skline00 Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 blackram, it really a question of how much you can afford to pay for an upgrade. The GTX1660TI seems from what I read to be a great card. I doubt $250 will reach it. More like $300.00.

Not to mention mining crap which occured in latest years. 10 minutes ago, skline00 said: blackram, it really a question of how much you can afford to pay for an upgrade. I can stretch to 1660ti but the thing is my cpu will bottleneck at 1200p in some other games and theres no reason to pair it with i5 7600 (OC 4.1Ghz). I would just put the regular 1660 6gb in (should be enough for ultra setting in il2 anyways) and in some 2 yrs will upgrade the mobo/cpu combo. Then GPU again and new monitor (1440p probably). BTW, 1660ti 6gb is already in the stores (here in central EU) and the cheapest is aroud 310 EUR. So I expect the cheapest 1660 6GB to be around 250 EUR. Yeah, the prices are crazy here. Not to mention the salaries so you can imagine the investment we must do for decent gaming rig. Edited February 28, 2019 by blackram
Seb71 Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 GTX 1660 would be a worse purchase compared with GTX 1660 Ti, in your situation (upgrade from existing GTX 1060 3GB). Even less gain now and you will have to replace it a bit sooner. If your estimate of 10% performance increase is correct, then you won't even notice that, outside of benchmarks. But you will notice you spent 250 euro.

Btw in 2 yrs I would probably buy everything new. There are single fan solutions which are much better now both 1060 and 1660. My rig is itx build. Edited February 28, 2019 by blackram
Seb71 Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 If you sold the graphics card, then it was no longer relevant to say that you "have" a GTX 1060 3GB. For proper recommendations, you should list your local prices for the graphics cards which are in your budget (and fit in your Mini-ITX case). For someone with a restricted budget, Mini-ITX is a poor choice, by the way. It was also a factor in the graphics card throttling. In an Mini-ITX case you might want a graphics card with a "blower" type cooler (with a radial fan).
TWC_Ace Posted February 28, 2019 Author Posted February 28, 2019 (edited) Mobo is mATX....case is midtower z1...prices I listed earlier in my topic...the case has okish cooling system, I even borrowed the gigagbyte 1660 6gb ITX (also one cooler) but that one never went beyond 68C gaming for 3hrs....It was the card that had poor cooling solutions.
