UPDATE: Graphics Issue - Case Closed!

Greeting All!

For those of you who were reading some of my posts here, the mystery has been solved. I’m doing this as it may be of help to some others perhaps. But to recap...

Have the Rift and running a nVidia GTX-1080ti with an i7 5930K six core and 32MB of DDR4 with W10 updated. Anyways, while flying in IL-2 on any map and any career, quick mission, etc. I would sporadically get really bad graphics glitches. It would present itself such that the graphics in VR would freeze, then a few seconds later shift me into a different position within the cockpit. Then freeze again, doing the same thing. The game itself would continue running in the background while the graphics were doing their “wonky thang”, as the sound continued on. Upon the graphics eventually settling out my plane would be some distance from where I was before the silliness occurred, if it hadn’t nose dived into the ground by that point.

I tried running IL-2 without Steam VR (which I still do BTW with no apparent ill effects and you can launch IL-2 right from Oculus Home), tons of different settings within the game, power management priorities set for the 1080ti, etc., etc.- all to no avail. Reaching increasing frustration as I knew it was something on my end, I bagan doing more searches on the internet and ran across two ideas I decided to give a whirl. I mean at this stage, why not?

The two things I did;

1. I moved my sensors. Not according to the setup you go through, but just took them by hand and turned them both more inward (one each sits on either side of my 42” display and about 8” out from there). This causes them to have a much more “overlapping” position to each other for sensing.

2. The other thing I immediately proceeded next to do was go into the Windows Control Panel and under Device Manager check all my USB Power Mangement settings. I hate to admit it, but I never knew there even was such a setting for the USB’s. Sure enough, every USB was set to something like  "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". The box was checked by default. I unchecked for the USB hubs under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".in order for everything get the juice it needed.

Viola! Expecting the same old song and dance to happen at any moment after 2 hours of throwing all types of scenarios at my graphics engine in IL-2, not one glitch. “Okay - must be a fluke of some kind” I thought. So last night at 11pm curiosity began to get the best of me and I jumped back into my VR/IL-2 time warp combo and flew until 3:30am this morning. And so once again after an additional 4-1/2 hours of 8 planes in quick combat, jumping in and out of the cool WW1 machines and several career missions it’s now running smoother than my marriage. Did not have one stutter or graphics glitch. Not one. (All my settings are on “Ultra” as well. I get the 90 FPS if I’m just out sightseeing by myself and the typical 45 FPS drop when I’m in a furball with 7 other planes).

I’m leaning a little towards the power setting for the USB’s not getting enough juice now and then causing my Rift to spasm out at times. Interestingly enough, I did notice at times that while in Google Earth VR that sometimes my controllers didn’t want to be picked up easily which may now verify the sensor relocations tracking better now. Perhaps it was a combination of the two. Either way, it’s working flawless right now and I’m done screwing around and back to actually enjoying flying, risk free.

Thanks to dburne, JonRedcorn and others for trying to help me figure this out. Much appreciated!

Oh, and if the wife happens to read this post, just joking Debbra. Your’e the best thing thats ever happened to me...and, well, IL-2...and the VR thing. And my custom built computer too. Can’t forget that. And Philly cheesesteaks. Gotta love those. Oh, and getting buzzed while watching Two and a Half Men and then going flying in the ‘109 K4...

I wholeheartedly agree with you on everything above except watching Two and a Half Men.
