Lol I was woken up to the sound of fast jets going over my house (Im just to the south of this flyover)! It scared the shit out of me!!!!

Kinda makes me think how vulnerable aircraft can be to ground fire as you can hear them coming from miles away if the are subsonic?

Peace to the crew that lost their lives, as somebody that knows the local geography, they really must have been desperate to try land in that park. The sad thing is that they circled to avoid crashing into people on the ground. If they didn't circle and just kept flying west they would have got to the peaks which is a much more open area.

Excuse me, that wasn't Haza in the editor forum...just thought I"d correct myself.

I thought I was quoting Dog1 for a minute...sorry Dog.

Haza's inane post is just here for the moment.

Flyby is cool.

When I first read the link I thought it was a crash...glad to see it was just a memorial.

I woke up hearing a heli., I just though Ow it is another Police raid!

AND THEN BOOOOOOM WHOOOSH!

AND THEN BOOM again!

Helmand in Sheffield.

I thought the date was Sat not Fri!

But please look into the reason that the B17 crashed?

I do really think if that they knew the area It would have worked out better!

Peace

AeroAce,

I have already raised the question regarding information about the crash in a separate post so it doesn't get lost in this area!

I may be the only one that was actually close to the OP's mention (in this community)

The fly past went over my head and woke me up!

I was in a daze, initially I thought It was a drug helie.

But when the fast jets went over again I knew what it was.

I only said suck ups because you all did not care for the post but just jumped on the OP. And no doubt this was because of the recent post by a DEV/MOD that says you need to get this under control!

I actually do not like this story. Basically a boy has tended the graves of these people for 75 years and now he has been made a kind of national hero. I think that it is a very  interesting that the B17 flight circled to not crash into said boy. But I also think that was a bad Idea as if they kept going west there would have been many safe places to put the plane down. Endcliffe Park is a forrest with about 200m of clear. Going on what the boy said that they circled twice, I cant see why they tried to land there?????

Dare I say it but the man that got the fly by is lieing or the crew made a big mistake.

AeroAce,

I think saying that he has been made a National Hero is a little bit OTT, however, you are of course entitled to your views. I think it is a nice story to come out of a tragic period to ensure that the sacrifices of these airman are not forgotten as people have walked past the memorial everyday with little knowledge of this event.  Indeed, these chaps were American, so it is perhaps nice in these times of nationalism to remember that a war touched everybody and not just one country and it was through a joint effort that eventually brought that episode to an end, although not the total end of conflict. Many people in the UK are not aware of such crash sites as most focus on those killed in another country rather than what happened on their door-step, however, at least in this instance, they are able to pay their respects without going overseas. Judging by the crowds it was a well turned event, so just a shame you didn't find out about it in time to attend as you were so close, however, I would like to think that people turned out to show their respects and support, rather than just to watch a free flypast.

I have asked the question about this B-17, as many like you have said that it should have carried on flying West, although from my limited investigation I'm not sure why it would have been flying West from Sheffield, so hopefully when further information becomes available it might explain why they did what they did and I will certainly share this with you.

Regards

EDIT:  Regarding your comment about me changing something because of a DEV/MOD saying something, I'm not sure where you believe this post was if you are referring to this actual topic/discussion.  However, from my limited discussion with a real moderator, they were very specific in mentioning the differences and power between a tester and a moderator.

what touched me most  was the photograph of them all together , so young , full of life . Then i keep thinking why did'nt they try to land anywhere else in the open fields long before getting to Sheffield .The UK is basically flat and full of open fields .

oh it so isnt!

Sheffield sits in the shadow of the high ground of the Peaks and the ground to the eastern fens of England are criss-crossed with airplane killing drains and dykes. Go into the dales and you have undulating landscapes sectioned by thick dry stone walls. North are the dales and moors of Yorkshire, another aircraft graveyard and right down the centre from the boarder with Scotland down into the midlands is the spine of the Pennines. All full of all sorts of stuff you wouldnt choose to land in or on given a choice.

For those that care to commit to more than a cursory look before making sweeping statements, theres a lot of information about MiAmigo thats been in existence a long time before the BBCs Dan Walker met Mr Foulds in the park this year.

The aircraft was crippled, crew members where probably already dead or severely injured and the weather wasnt clear but overcast and at 5PM in february its getting dark in the UK.. Reports have the cloud base at 500ft and AeroAce will be able to testify that 500ft up or down around Sheffield can happen very quickly at 150mph. Moreover thats 500ft above Sea level. A lot of the Sheffield area is perhaps 100 to well over 500ft already. I also dont think you can make the assumption that the crew were even aware of where they were and given the reported state of the B17, decending was likley a one shot affair with little opportunity to be able to climb quickly if at all.  As such i dont think you can speculate on the hows and whys. Its not BOX where you are better able to make considred choices as you sip your coffee whilst flying over largley level ground with 500M of clear air no matter what.

The comment about "if they kept going west" is also quite laughable - as far as im aware the crew where from all over America, not Ranmoor. How the hell would they have been expected to know the local topography, espcially given the fact they probably had no idea where they were or even which way west was? BTW Flying west at 150 mph gives you less than 1 minute before you hit the hills of the peaks and youll be landing in fields with large dry stone walls every 20M.  Ever hit a 3ft thick dry stone wall at 80mph without the benefit modern crumple zone protection?? Perhaps they had already seen those fields or the simlar fields that surround Sheffield and chosen to avoid them for that reason?

10,000 showed up because of the media interest in Mr Fould's story probably more than that of Mi Amigo alone. Im quite sure many wouldnt have if there wasnt going to be the specticle of the fly by but who cares. Thats 10,000 people and how many millions more who watched on TV that now know a bit more about the sacrifices made.

As for what Mr Fould's is. To me he is someone who deserves the recognition for his care and dedication to the memory of the the crew. BTW he did not tend the graves. There are no graves there. Nor did he get his fly by through lying and i think thats a pretty disgraceful and ignorant comment. The "avoidance" story was seized upon by the miliary at the time the official account goes with the "sacrifce" line becomming the legend. So its understandable a small child should be influfenced by this. What he saw is what he saw. I challenge anyones childhood memory of an event to be 100% accurate.  Whether that was the whole of the situation i doubt it but equally whether that crew deserved to be remembered because of desperate herioc last minute actions that may or more likely not have occurred or the very fact they were in that bomber in the first place is moot.

BTW - theres a memorial held at St Augustines Parish Church on the sunday nearest to the anniversay of the crash so theres another chance to pay your respects if you so wish. I think this year its a 2PM on the the 24th.

After getting over the initial shock that this was possibly posted in the wrong forum, I was able to collect myself, finally, and have only now been able to read the article.

Thanks for posting, dog1.
