NETSCAPE Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 I read the plane specification in game and there is little to control or maintain. I tried flying a couple missions in career but my engine would freeze only after descending a few 100 meters to attack or dodge enemy fire.
HandyNasty Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 reduce mixture might help. Never had the engine overcool on Po-2 and typically I fly at 85%-90% mixture to avoid black trail due to too rich mixture. But i haven't flown the Po-2 that much yet, so maybe on a very very cold map (-20 --> -30 degrees) you might want to decrease mixture more than that 1
PatrickAWlson Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 On a very cold map you might not want to fly an open cockpit plane ❄️ 1

Low mixture = less cold engine, like the real life. WIth the U2, you can even fly at 0% mixture. 3 hours ago, PatrickAWlson said: On a very cold map you might not want to fly an open cockpit plane ❄️ Thoses night witches had to be very hot to fly in cold weather.... Ok I know... this is a crappy joke. I am out! do not look for me, I am far away!! 2
PatrickAWlson Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 I was reading an article on what they had to endure. Stripping off gloves to manually activate and toss a flare. Back seater walking out on the wing because the jury rigged bomb didn't drop. Since they flew missions from front line staging areas they were always in danger of being overrun. Tough.

Shouldn't the engine quit at 0% mixture?

I'm assuming he means 0% on the control or full back, which does not necessarily imply 0% actual mixture ratio. Just like how 100% flaps on the 109 is 40 degrees or whatever full flaps is. 1
=420=Syphen Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 (edited) In real life, they would have used "Winter kit" on the engine. Cowling to specifically block off the cooling fins of the engine. We do this today with aircooled engines.. Cubs, Champs, Chiefs, Taylor Craft etc.. My plane uses sheet metal covers to reduce airflow into the engine compartment, and then insulated jackets over the intake runners and also on the oil sump. I did find pictures of PO-2 that appear to have sheet metal covers for the cylinder jugs to prevent excessive airflow over them: Edited February 23, 2019 by [CPT]HawkeyeP 3
Soilworker Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 That would be a cool modification to have in the sim.
