HUD on with icons off?

Is there a way to have the HUD (heading, speed, alt) on but turn the aircraft/nav markers/object icons off?

 

Edit: never mind - you have to go through the options; I thought there might be a key just for icons.

Yep, there is. Press the i key to toggle icons.

When I press 'i' it turns off the HUD (and icons) entirely.

 

I can have either icons-only or HUD+icons. I can't find a way, using key commands, to have the HUD on and icons off. I can do it via the options, but not with keys.

Yes !

It's in the gui options, been a while since I had to set it up so can no longer advise you exactly from memory, but you can basically turn off hints and tips (Techchat) and hud instruments, (compass) while keeping the server chat
