First Time In The History of Flying IL-2

It’s been flawless. No CTD’s, etc. for Lord knows how many hours.

I just started flying VR with Oculus in earnest today in career mode. Today during two two missions flying the JU-52 noticed once going outbound and once coming inbound the graphics froze for about 4 or 5 seconds. The sound still continued, which told me the sim was still running in the background. Once the graphics returned I had jumped ahead from where I was. Same situation each time.

Upon landing I continued career mode for my next mission. It stumbled once again outbound to target area, but when I was returning to base it did the same graphics freeze again. Only this time the game never recovered. I could still hear the sounds (including me crashing) but after waiting about 5-10 minutes Windows finally came up with an error report saying the program had stopped responding. Sigh.

It had been running fine all this time in 4K with 2D, but granted I wasn’t flying careers like I am know so don’t know since the career missions are pretty long if this has something to do with graphics buffering in the background.

i have an i7 5930K, 16.0 GB of DDR4 RAM, SSD drive and a GTX 1080ti for graphics on a Windows 10 machine with latest updates. Inputs are all CH Products. Setting are all set to max. Frame rates are really smooth even though maxed out in VR.

Again, sounds like the graphics buffering finally caught up with me and it finally just locked up, or no? Any suggestions? Should this be posted in the nVidia section instead? I never have checked my FPS as in the sim it seems super smooth so never thought to verify.

I’ve heard that the graphics for the screen in 2D when flying in VR can be “de-tuned” to draw in 1028x768 or something like that as it won’t affect the graphics represented in VR and can free up some horsepower, though I’ve never done this as it runs smooth for me. Could this help the buffering issue though with the card itself or will this have a null effect on what I’m looking at?

That is odd.

When is last time you did a clean Nvidia driver install?

Do you have a lot of programs running in background?

Are you running GeForce Experience?

Clean Driver Install:

Download latest Nvidia drivers.

Disconnect internet cable

Uninstall drivers with Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode.

Reboot. ( internet still disconnected).

Install latest Nvidia drivers, installing ONLY the driver and PhysX.

After install complete reboot again.

Connect ethernet cable.

Make sure in Nvidia Control Panel IL-2 set to " Prefer Maximum Performance". Leave other Nvidia settings at default.

Also insure anything Windows Game Bar related in Windows 10 is disabled.

Did clean driver install about 3 months ago. I do not use GeForce Experience since it was causing too many problems. I’ll check for programs hogging resources in the background too though.

I’ll try again, thanks!

Has as anyone else ever experienced this?

UPDATE: Did a clean install of driver update for nVidia card. Only installed Phys X and diver. Shut down a few background apps that were running and made sure Windows Gaming mode was running while inside of IL-2 also. Did everything on the list as presented above. Everything ran great the first career mission in the JU-52. Was coming in approach home airfield when all of a sudden...it froze. For about 3 seconds. Then it froze again about half a minute later.

The second time it stuttered was REALLY strange. It dropped me in the cockpit at a totally different angle than when I left (looking forward, though when I came back into the cockpit after the graphics stuttered, I was facing looking behind the bulkhead wall behind the co-pilot. Then after stuttering again for a split second it dropped me back in the cockpit as if I was directly facing the co-pilot, but at the same time I CAUGHT THE GRID THAT STEAM VR DIPLAYS FOR A SPLIT SECOND ALSO IN VIEW)!  I finished the mission normally without having program freeze totally up then backed out of the game normally without further incident.

Hmm...seeing how the VR was so messed up is time (and I was doing nothing but looking forward at the time) I wonder if Steam VR is wigging out IL-2 in this regard? I mean, Steam VR on several occasions has gone and changed my settings within Steam unbeknownst to me, that was until I check (such as turning the chaperone mode back on).

I can’t help but wonder if 1CG made the IL-2 series native VR thus eliminating the need to also run Steam VR how easier life would be. With the funky VR graphics jumping around like that and the Steam VR white grid showing up for a fraction of a second it’s trying to tell us something.

Until this gets nailed down I’m done with careers in VR as it’s just too flakey. Never had any problems in 2D flying. May be just a coincidence but damn, it’s soooo tough going backwards to 2D now.

Literally have none of these problems dude, thought you had it working well. It's definitely something on your end causing issues.

I would not use Windows Gaming Mode, I would disable that as well as any Game Bar functionality.

Tell me about it.

I didn’t and still don’t have these problems when flying 2D in 4K graphics, just VR. I have tried control panel settings in nVidia, swung sliders back and forth in IL-2 - no change. I think I’ll have it solved and might be 10 minutes later might be 1/2 an hour....BAM. The graphics glitch. Game is still running in the background, it’s the graphics that spasms out.

Everything else I run on this 1080ti in VR - no problems. It’s strictly in IL-2 where this problem happens, and I’ve ruled out Steam VR now.

I posted this elsewhere, but today flew a Stuka straight and level just to see how it ran without Steam VR and Open VR instead. Same issue cropped up again. Graphics would twitch around in VR, sometimes dropping you sideways in the seat, then eventually it figures out which way you were originally facing and re-deposits you in the cockpit correctly. All the time it’s doing this the sim itself keeps running as usual. When the glitch happens it drops the FPS when flying solo from 90 to 44/45 FPS. Even when you arrive back in the cockpit it stays like that for a little while before going back up to 89/90 FPS.

It’s almost as if the nVidia is trying to clear itself out with code before resuming its regular 90 FPS.

A shame cuz going back to 2D even in 4K sux now that I’ve flown VR but with the current state of this I’m gonna just do quick combat as it’s just too unreliable to fly a career.

Turned it completely off in Windows menu now. More testing today...saga continues...
