Oculus Rift and Strange White Grid

Brand new with this VR stuff, so please bear with me.

upon flying today I noticed a faint grid surrounding me at times while flying in IL2. When in the hanger I could see it surrounding me quite well. I thought one of the had held VR controllers was doing it, so sat them off to the side. No luck. If I don’t move at all the grid seems to fade away,  it I think that’s a fluke. I’ve only noticed it so far while in IL2, therefore I figured it must be a setting in the game itself, but checked it to no avail.

It is almost like it’s a safety zone around me or something. It is also quite tall in VR. I don’t know if this is something to get rid of within the Oculus menu itself (I’ve checked but still can’t get rid of it), something in IL2 or that annoying Steam VR interjecting more unwanted lunacy without me asking for it. I’m going to poke around in Steam VR some as I wouldn’t put it past them to do something like this.

Anybody else experience this at all? Argh. Not one thing it’s another. Thanks in advance, as always!

UPDATE: Went into Steam VR and of course the chaperone option got turned on once again. I thought that was it. I do have the option within IL2 that keeps you from drifting outside the cockpit turned on (keeps it realistic so you can stick your head outside the confines of the canopy).

However, the grid seems to only appear when I pushed my head way back in my seat (it grew brighter as I did). I tried moving my head side to side to see if I could get the grid back bu no. But then when I landed and had the canopy open and leaned way outside the cockpit the grid reappeared again!

Is this an IL2 normality/abnormality that is known in VR concerning head movement outside a given area? But why the grid if it is. Immersion breaker. Still trying to track down the cause though.

It has to do with your steam VR setup. You have it set on room-scale. Reset this to standing

Yup. I suspected all along it was Steam VR. Here’s the catch...

i only noticed this when I would reach the limits that I put in within the Steam VR room scaling calibration. The scaling I had was “standing”. Got to thinking what if I simply told Steam to use “medium” instead then hit quick calibrate.

This did the trick for me! Abbsolutley no more white grids when I nearly reached my “limits” anymore. I am now free to lean back as far as I want and with the cockpit canopy open can lean out as far as I wish with no white grids appearing. I think “standing” scale was limiting my zone too much. Checking “medium” then “quick calibrate” solved both problems (the dreaded ring and now the grids appearing too soon).

Just an FYI and thanks for the reply too! Happy flying!
