Can anyone ID this 1917-18 plane?

A friend of mine sent me a photo of his aviator uncle, plane and ground crew.

His uncle was a US pilot and the photo is from 1917-18.

Can anyone ID this aircraft?

A Salmson 2 most likely. Common. Not in RoF.

Wow. Didn't expect such a fast response.

Thank you.

Doesn't look like the struts and distance between the wings are correct for a Salmson.

Salmson was my first thought too but the struts are wrong.  Look at the outer struts.

There were many factories building that one. There might have been variations. The inward tilted center struts are remarkable.

The engine I would say is a radial for certain, for a plane this size I would only know of the Salmson engine that woukd fit there.

It might be a Salmson 7, having pilot and observer/gunner back to back instead of in two separate cockpits out of shouting distance. But in all, a similar plane.

Another picture of the same model, from Wikipedia.

No Wikipedia article on it. Nice looking design.

"Rosebud's Early Aviation" is a fine website for identifying planes. At least, if you have SOME idea about the nationality.
Cause you have to click each link to see the photos, and that is a looong list...

The site was gone for some time, but then someone saved it as a historical archive. I found plenty of interesting craft there,
which I had never heard of before. Enjoy!

EDIT: Dammit, the site cannot be reached? At least for me... Is it down again? Does anybody know a newer address?

OT, but where is this wonderful museum stocked full of locomotives, cars, motorcycles and aircraft?

Nevermind - I see it is in Prague.  Looks like an amazing museum.

The site appears to be up for me.

Rosebud was a regular in "Dawn Of Aces" back in 2006-07, flew with him often. I had heard that he passed away around the time that ROF was released and his site was down for a bit. (which, to me, seemed to confirm his passing). The site did come back up a few years ago, but I've not heard anything of Rosebud himself. It is a great site.

*edit*  Looks like I am wrong. The home page is up, but all links appear to be broken. A shame, he had a great collection of photos etc.
