unreasonable Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I wonder if anyone has yet used a 4xHD TV as a monitor, whether for BoS or any other sim or PC game? Horrendous number of pixels to push, I wonder what sort of frame rates I would get and whether going SLI will make any difference?
unreasonable Posted February 20, 2014 Author Posted February 20, 2014 That is what my tame geek tells me, but I understand that SLI does not work too well in the RoF engine - not sure if it will help. I am tempted by the 84" 4xHDTV since the space around my current 70" would just take the extra size... now I see I need 4 Titans as well ... hmmm, time to cut someone's allowance. 1
VR-DriftaholiC Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 (edited) I would wait a while on 4K. It's going to come down a lot in price soon and right now most displays are 30fps 4K which would not make for a fun flying experience. Shouldn't we all be waiting for oculus rift anyways Edited February 21, 2014 by driftaholic
unreasonable Posted February 24, 2014 Author Posted February 24, 2014 I had not thought to check the refresh rate - I have got so used to 50-60 that 30 now looks horribly jerky. As for Oculus Rift - I will believe in that when I see how it will be possible to use it while wearing glasses and manipulating mouse, keyboard and in-flight coffee cup!
Venom Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Mouse is no problem at all, the keyboard needs a little time. But I guess any serious flightsimmer will have some kinda HOTAS, and be that only a joystick with a few buttons. What concerns the in-flight coffee: if you drink out of a mug, that won't be any problem, either. But be aware, the OR will make your blood pressure and adrenaline bursting, anyway, thus another shot of coffeine might not be the best advise!
GregP Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Yes, I'm running a 55-inch 4K TV (the Seiki SE55UY04) and absolutely loving it. I switched from a four-27-inch screen setup and I wouldn't go back. Yes, the 30 Hz refresh rate limit might bother some, but since I'm accustomed to roughly that kind of FPS in sims like DCS and IL-2, it's not a big problem for me. I would say the 4K makes a bigger difference in DCS than in IL-2, as the former has so many displays and buttons that get used in the cockpit, and being able to see them all clearly on one big screen is a huge improvement in immersion, at least for me, over any other multi-monitor setup I've ever tried. I had dual 7970s before trading them for a single R9 290, and even one 7970 at 4K in DCS (since DCS doesn't support Crossfire) was enough to maintain 25-45 FPS. With the R9 290 in IL-2, at Ultra settings and 4xAA, I can get an average of about 35 FPS.
unreasonable Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 Thanks for info everyone ... still undecided! I think I can get enough processing power, but I am not sure about the 30 Hz limit, I am so used to a very smooth 50-60 FPS! Probably stick with my Sony 70 inch for now, it is still a really good picture.
VR-DriftaholiC Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 just wait 60hz 4k will be a affordable reality by q4 this year.
AndyHill Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 4 screens is a bit problematic, since you will have a thick frame right in the middle of the image. 3 is mostly fine, since the center of the view is free of obstructions. However, for RoF you need to turn post effects off to get a clear image, in BoS it's currently not possible. Of course you also need to pick the video card carefully, not all of them support configurations with 4 monitors.
