Little trick with TrackIR - automatically lower / rise head

I have disabled rising / lowering head movement with TrackIR because I have problem how the view is sometimes too high or low when looking forward after looking around. It's related to TrueView option and I have wrote about it to NaturalPoint. They confirmed this bug and plan fixing it. But it might take some time…

Here is a little trick I use currently:

I edited the file in game folder …/data/input/current.map

Changed line

action("bc_head_trans_y_p","State","trackir_axis_Y");

to

action("bc_head_trans_y_p","State","_trackir_axis_PITCH");

Then saved and made the file "read only". This is needed or the game resets the line back to default when starting game.

Now your head up/down movement is linked with looking up/down. If you look bit upward you're able to see over the engine cowl and when you look down at the instrument your head position gets lowered (really helpful with planes like I-16). Feels quite natural actually.

The downside of this is that you can't change your controls if you don't remove the read only protection first. And you get message when starting game that it couldn't write a file.

Remember to backup your original files.

I do almost the same thing with EdTracker & Opentrack.  Edtracker does not have that vertical movement so I have used Opentrack to say that whenever I look down I also want to lower my head position and move a little forward and whenever I look up I also want to raise my head position 3 or 4 inches.  This way I can  look at all my instruments even on the I16 which can be tricky and tilting my head back and looking down my nose also sees down the aircraft nose.

Unfortunately TrackIR software lacks those features what Opentrack has.

This is a great bit of thinking about a problem Remontti!! Works great and, like you say, feels really natural.

Thank you!!

I do the same with my EdTracker, though I havent tried translating the movement for when I tilt my head up, only when I tilt it downwards. I may attempt that as a separate profile.

I only do it between 5 & 20 degrees of looking down and 5-15 degrees looking up.  In all my settings there is always a dead spot so nothing moves unless I make a deliberate head movement so I don't have my view move when trying to use the gunsight.   There is no problem raising your view when looking up at an enemy because he will be 10s or even 100s of metres away so moving 5cm closer doesn't make a discernible difference.

Thanks for the charts! I may try this tonight and see how it works. One thing with my current setup is that when I try and look down over the edge of the cockpit to look down beside the plane, my head dips down and I can't see it. Makes it a pain to check the yak's fuel guage. Any idea how to resolve that?

Try my curves because I can see the Yak fuel gauges OK.    You could also try altering the bottom curve so that  looking down more than 15 or 20 degrees moves your head back to its original position

This is one of those "Now why didn't I think of that!" moments. I am now experimenting with those settings. Thank you very much Roblex!
