F-Dog Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 Hey Folks I have what I consider to be a fairly high spec machine: i7-9700k Processor, GTX 1080 11BG, 32GB RAM I've noticed that even now I cannot run the game in High spec using VR, in normally mode I can have everything on Ultra but in VR hell no. Does anyone else have a similar spec machine and have any tips for getting the most out of the graphics? I have read some VR tips on this forums but they seem a little dated now. You thoughts greatly appreciated
dburne Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 I just built this i9 9900k rig three weeks ago ( specs in sig) and I am very pleased with my performance, petty much maintaining 85-90 fps about all the time. I do not run any mods and I only use the game GUI for my graphics settings, + running SS at 1.50 for my Rift using Oculus Tray Tool. I have my cpu running at 5.1 GHz on all cores.
40plus Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 I'm running VR (Vive) on a Ryzen 1700x, 16GB, 1080ti machine with all settings maxxed out and no issues. What issues are you running into that make you unhappy with performance?
F-Dog Posted February 25, 2019 Author Posted February 25, 2019 My FPS seems to constantly be around 45fps, I'd like the crank the shadows and draw distances up etc but it just can't seem to handle it.
=362nd_FS=Campbell Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 If using a Rift Try turning off the ASW with the oculus tool trey. It’s normal for ASW to lock you in at 45fps, it does that to keep it smooth. It will never break 45fps with the ASW on.

I'm using the HTC Vive i don't have an option to turn off ASW, but i'm wondering if this is similar to Motion Smoothing, i'll try turning that off and see if it makes a difference.
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 The VR tips on these forums are not dated, as of the base issues, nothing changed. The only thing that got improved is performance with HUD on. It still costs frames though. This is heritage to the engine and will remain like it for a while - single core CPU clock is still important, the game still doesn't properly separate to multithreading, RAM clock is more important than RAM size, the settings still have the same effects, and maintaining 90fps on ultra at all times is impossible no matter how fast your system is, as its causality is found in the engine and how it computes - It hadn't been written for VR originally. But for its age, and its frametime now, it's producing a good job already. Now all it needs is a proper zoom and contrast sliders for the different VR penals. 1

Thanks Fenris_Wolf, i followed your signature link, I see that you've written an awesome guide for Oculus users, but Alas i'm a Vive user. I do have the MOD installed that allows me to turn of the prop etc, and I can run the game without it feeling lumpy, the main scope of my topic is to question how far do you have to go until you can achieve the higher graphical settings like longer draw distances and high shadows. I have to have mine set to low despite having what I regard as a high spec machine. Edited February 26, 2019 by F-Dog
Dutch2 Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 Think His GTX1080 is bottlenecking, try to overclock the GTX1080, if not know how use the autodetect function. Read this: afterburner And watch on how to do this:

My GTX1080 is just like yours on the low entry level of VR flying. Waiting for an €1000,- price drop of the RTX2080ti ?

I recently installed Afterburner (new to Over clocking) I ran the OC scan like in the video, it took about 8 minutes and now have Curve written next to the Core Clock. Do you think I should consider upping anything like Core Voltage and Power Limit?
Dutch2 Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 Do you mean shift the voltage line higher in the graph? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KNQ2cyMZ0dA If so I would advice: stay to the advice from afterburner, without experience of overclocking, keep the auto overclock settings they are safe. The same can be done to overcloking your CPU and RAM. But first thing first. Now here is the trick after saving your autoclock settings open the side panel of your PC case, so you will not have an heat build off, while playing IL2. 1

With proper ventilation/case air flow, it should run cooler with the side panel left on.

Yep if it is proper ? Just test it with or without side panel, think most silent compact builds like we see more and more, that have an non chimney system would have benefit from this. Overclocking gpu's now is almost a waste of time, they regularly boost into the 1950's to 2000mhz, touching the power limits or voltage sliders do absolutely nothing on pascal cards. It's a waste of time really. Nvidia locked down overclocking so much with pascal. I hate it. But I guess it's better than getting an AMD card and finding out it's maxed out already and all you can do is maybe undervolt the thing so it doesn't light your house on fire.
skline00 Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 JonRedcorn, my Radeon VII with an adequate stock cooler has some OCing headroom and does NOT "light the house on fire". When the EK custom waterblocks come out I'll put one on and crank it up. On stock cooler, I easily had 150 OC headroom. My GTX1080TI OC with its waterblock is still king but the Radeon VII has really narrowed the gap.
