BornToBattle Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 My best friend from back in AZ is here visiting us for a week in MN. As a last second thought, I asked him if he could bring along his Oculus Rift in order to try out some flying with it. He did. He also mentioned that he really doesn’t use it much anymore due to eye constraints of his glasses and the headset. So he is saying he whole thing is mine to keep. The original box and all components too. Whoa. Okaaaay. I believe it is a first generation headset. Much difference between first and second generation? Guess tomorrow I will find out if the hype stands up to the actual testing of it with me. I’m an eye candy guy though. I have been holding off waiting for the next generation of Rift headsets to appear, chiefly so the resolution can be increased. Now with this latest update I see that scaling has been introduce and/or updated. Does this change things up in so far as VR much with IL-2? Guess I’ll give an update with this post once I do some flying with it tomorrow. Really looking forward to trying it with all the open cockpit planes. 1
-332FG-Gordon200 Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 (edited) Welcome to the club! You are in for a treat. You'll never look at flight sims the same. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I feel like I'm living in a masterpiece when flying IL*2 in VR. To get prepared download and install the Oculus set-up. Takes awhile so best to get this out of the way. https://www.oculus.com/rift/setup/ You'll also need to download Steam and Steam VR. https://store.steampowered.com/ I no longer have a Rift so can't give you the latest tweaks for optimum performance. The latest update (and a patch to follow soon) have improved image quality to the point where I have reset my Odyssey+ to all default settings for now. Edited February 7, 2019 by Gordon200
Panzerlang Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 I'm running mine with the Oculus software (can't work without that), Open Composite API (instead of SteamVR API) and Oculus Tray Tools (so the Composite API can be adjusted for AWS, SS and other bits and pieces). I also run with zero SS (super sampling) as having it on makes so little difference as to not be worth the FPS hit. I actually find spotting easier and the planes at distance look a bit nicer (crisper).
BornToBattle Posted February 10, 2019 Author Posted February 10, 2019 OMG...yeah, it’s definately a game changer. I’m used to razor sharp 4K graphics on my 42” monitor but I am quite surprised that the graphics and smoothness in VR is much better than expected! While in Oculus Home I can very easily make out the screen door effect but while in IL2 don’t notice it at all really. Much better. If I really concentrate on one small tiny area I can just make out barely visible hair thin black lines, so for me it presents no issues. So much so I let him take the Rift back home with him, bought my own and then turned the random act of kindness around to him and ordered the CH USB Combatstick and peddles for him through Amazon as he has neither in hopes we can fly IL2 in VR together when he gets back home. Anyways, yeah. One can truly appreciated the dev efforts much more when running in VR versus monitor. The levels of attention to all the details just literally pop out so much more. Still find my self hitting my hand on my PC desk as instinct tells me to reach out for a particularly control or object inside the cockpit that in reality isn’t there. At one point while doing a hard right banking turn along with using my rudder peddles and my brain was telling my body was actually physically beginning to high slide in my seat towards the opposite side in the aircraft seat. Literally felt like I was moving. Too funny. I’m going to have to investigate this super sampling setting issue further for spotting other aircraft. I’m running an i7 with a 1080ti and graphic settings within IL2 on Ultra and moves along smooth as silk with no stutters. Rift in so far as head movement is instantaneous. Love it. Beats that crappy switch any day. Personally, I’m definately an eye candy, all-sliders-to-the-right kind of guy and always side on the part of realism over convenience when it comes to gameplay too. Think I might start another topic concerning super sampling and spotting while maintaining the highest level of graphics along with realistic spotting range expectations. 1 1
Panzerlang Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 I pretend I have a not so good pair of pilot's goggles (bulky frame) and castor-oil has got smeared all over them too. ?
71st_AH_statuskuo Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 You should definitely get lefuneste's mode, it'll help with your ID. A lot of options in that mod but the zoom is the most useful. Also for spotting don't set the supersample too high, I have mine at 130& in steamvr.
JonRedcorn Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Bless your heart for running on the ultra preset.
ACG_pezman Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Haha! I had almost the exact same thing happen. Buddy of mine - who makes much better money than I - bought the headset and didn’t like it, offered it to me. I had no interest in VR at the time because I knew it required a beast PC and I don’t have the money to build it. Well, I have a decent enough setup (i5 4690k OC’d to 4.5Ghz and an AMD RX 580), so I gave it a shot. Well on SP quick mission, with no eye candy anywhere and one enemy aircraft, I can get a solid 45fps - which is awful - but it was enough to hook me. Upgraded the GFX card to a 1070 G1 and now I can hold 45fps with eye candy in most situations (balanced settings, no SS added). Totally thrilled and addicted - took me four months to get the new gfx card, and it’s still not enough, but I just upgraded (still shipping) to an i7 9700k, adata NVME SSD (faster than 970), Z390 MB (with powerful VRM), 3000mhz DDR4, and a new HDD (because mine are about 15 yo now)... so I’m hoping this will allows me to crank up the candy some more. Gfx card hovers at about 10-16ms frame timing in nearly every situation - maybe this will help out with the load? either way, VR in this games hooks ya, then you somehow find money to spend on your addiction. Next upgrade is goin to be another GFX card and maybe faster RAM if needed. also, I have spent all my “mad money” for 2019 already ? 59 minutes ago, 392FS_Jred said: Bless your heart for running on the ultra preset. Hey, are you the same John Redcorn that flew with JG2 in warthunder? If so, it’s me volcom - how have you been man? Glad to see ya back with the community and out of WT ?

I am not, I am super surprised to find out somebody else had the same name as me since I thought I was the only one with it. Never was a war thunder player! Sorry my dude. Would be down to do some flying though since you are also in florida. Let's get some kills. Edited February 12, 2019 by 392FS_Jred
BornToBattle Posted February 12, 2019 Author Posted February 12, 2019 (edited) Weeell so much for the immersion factor now that I have a dumb Steam VR safety chaperone ring around me. Five days and worked fine now suddenly it’s injected into the sim. I posted separately concerning this bizarre anomaly as I call it. Dumb. Edited February 12, 2019 by BornToBattle
ACG_pezman Posted February 14, 2019 Posted February 14, 2019 It’s a setting in steam I believe - should be able to turn it off in there
