Hey gang,

Just curious, do any of you run a dedicated PhysX card in your system?

Based on what I have read, on my system with the GTX 770 not sure I would get much benefit if any.

And I think only certain games really support it? Don't think BOS will/does ?

I have a GTX 560 Ti laying around, and was the reason I was curious...

The few games that support it look pretty cool, but it's canned physical particle effects. Planetside 2 had it, then dropped then, then added it, then disabled it, and last I checked it is still disabled.

It's neat, but aside from making some interesting sparks when rounds impact armor it wouldn't add much to BoS if it was added.

That is about what I thought, thanks for the info!

I meant limited actually - that was my mistake and didn't come across accurately at all. PhysX has a limited set of equations and particles it can do. For example, it can't be utilized to do the same computations that RoF uses to process how a separated wing falls to the earth. It can be used, though, for a particular element and how it reacts with a certain force in a particular environment - but it's limited in how it can be used and for what. It's not canned as in it'll produce the same output each time.

It could be interesting if there was a system which could bring more aesthetic detail to damage modelling, with parts from different materials that show creases, wrinkles, fragments still attached that shake into the wind, something that gives a better idea of impact and deformation... something like this:

For now we're basically still stuck with decals, unfortunately...

I remember the talk of PhysX and FMs, but I saw some information about the limitations of the calculations that it could do and that it mostly did Newtonian physics using set equations and not custom ones like FMs would require. It also had a limited fluid physics capability. This was back when it was Ageia's baby. It may have changed a lot since then, I just remember that there were some pretty big roadblocks in using PhysX for FM. For visual damage it would be great though.

Of course, it's funny going back to threads that talk of this great tech and seeing some posts about it and then thinking about how those predictions parallel some of the new tech coming out that "will be a game changer" (like OR).

You know this physics processing on a chip is a good idea.

I bet it turns into a big deal.

You will be buying physics cards for your computer like you used to buy sound cards.

I suppose technically that post's prediction came about somewhat. PhysX did make it in to about half the computers out there (nVidia based), but it's not separate and it's hardly utilized.

It's just interesting to go back and see the tech that was stated to be the wave of the future, the next big thing, something that will revolutionize gaming, and yet it was more of a blip in the grand scheme of things that slid away.

And if you really are interested in reading a lot of nonsense about PhysX and how it should die (because surprise, AMD owners don't like not having it), this thread is the epitome of one side vs the other in the hardware department and completely full of nonsensical uninformed rhetoric as well: http://forums.anandtech.com/archive/index.php/t-2335335.html

Da...yum.  That was "rendered"?  In physX?

I just asked a similar question in another forum and was pretty much told/advised to keep my GTX 465 on the shelf.

I may just add it for that...I've got enough PSU to do it.

Thanx dburnette, Extreme_one and everyone else...your insight changed my mind.   :salute:
