OK I haven't bought this yet but I've had  ROF  from day one. Im interested in this for one reason.. VR !!. Ive watched a couple of utube vr videos and apart from everyone wanting to fly DR1`s I noticed they all had Prism sights!  Well! that kinda put me off! Is there an option to turn arcade mode off in the full game?

The field mods can be blocked on server level.

This said, if people want to block their vision with rxtra cockpit item that did historically exist, it's up to them.

All of the extra sights are modifications just as they were in Rise of Flight. As I've learned in my most recent dogfights on the weekend, they actually block the sight a fair bit and sometimes aren't worth even taking. Arcade mode?

Hello and welcome!

I haven’t experienced VR myself yet, but from what I’ve heard it is worth the price of admission all by itself. I’m still holding off and sticking with TrackIR until some of the long range visibility problems and screen door effect are addressed with newer VR hardware.

It’s understandable that you would think reflector sights did not exist yet during WWI, and they were indeed a rarity, although the invention dates back to 1900 and is in fact surprisingly low-tech.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reflector_sight

This is addressed in Flying Circus (and Rise of Flight before it) by having them available only on Central machines from around mid-war, and even then only as an optional mod. Entente machines, by comparison, have collimator sights such as the Aldis available as a modification, and standard on the SE5a. While these look more period appropriate at first sight (pun intended), they are in fact quite a bit more advanced.

Speaking of Rise of Flight and the Fokker Dr.I in particular, having flown in that game for close to 10 years now, I have an equal number of sorties in the Dr.I. It’s not that I dislike the machine, it’s in fact quite a revolutionary design despite its number of wings, but I’ve always preferred to look at them from my gunsight.

As for the arcade nature of any flightsim, this really is up to the people who fly it. I’ve only ventured into the WW2 side of things in multiplayer a few times and have experienced much of that arcade behaviour in places like BERLOGA. It’s anyone’s right to fly how they see fit, so long as the sim itself has a solid historical foundation. In that respect, I can guarantee you that this part of the community is every bit as demanding. Perhaps too demanding, even.

If none of this scares you off, and you’re still prepared to fly in a time when men were men and planes were kites, then come join us!

Thanks for the informative answers. As a veteran of  Wings Over Flanders Fields  I much prefer a solid single player  with believable A.I. but WOFF does not have VR so here I am. I`m happy to use period realistic mods but reflector sights were only trialed  in 1918. Never used in combat during the war. As for my question of "arcade" mode I was referring to the reflector sights. I don`t like to use any unrealistic equipment or "HUD  enhancements" .   Im not expecting the dynamic campaign like in WOFF  but I do like  to play against good A.I.

I can assure you that the reflector sight is completely optional. The AI is decent enough, though what you'll really want to try out down the line is multiplayer. Even away from public servers where most of the arcade fighting takes place, there are online events and dynamic campaigns which should offer you something very interesting and quite historically accurate at times.

This certainly isn't WOFF. I enjoy WOFF as well for its level of detail for everything surrounding the actual flying, but the flight models itself just isn't quite there — which is understandable as it is still Combat Flight Simulator 3 under the hood.

In any case, congrats on your purchase!

Makes rumbling noises, but doesn't actually explode. My opinion on this is known.

They were used in frontline units flying the Fokker Dr.I and Albatros D.V (cannot recall the name of the Jasta that used it on the Dr.I, but it is known what unit used it (EDIT: IIRC it was Jasta 12):
