sturmkraehe Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Iron Eagle 3 or 4 has WWII warplanes............................................................................ Yeah, even a rare Zero. But the plot was totally crap.
Bladderburst Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Hehe I was joking, that movie really is awful. The whole Iron Eagle franchise is garbage but so delightful to watch. 1
Nil Posted March 8, 2014 Author Posted March 8, 2014 Iron eagle is so bad that it's.. baddest! I still remember the scene where (among his never ending missiles) his maverick is able to fire when 'weight on wheels' and his 'instructor' don't even know if it's possible!
Gutermann Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Yeah, even a rare Zero. But the plot was totally crap. and the german was flying a P51A.
Rjel Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) I think Twelve O'clock High is far and away the best WWII era aviation film made. But it has to be watched as a film, not merely as airplanes buzzing around. That's more the work of a documentary about wartime. I think too many flight simmers get caught up in the visuals and don't appreciate the story line. If Twelve O'clock High is based on it's flying alone then it would fail miserably as an "aviation" film. It's more about story and character. Then again, too many younger viewers simply won't watch an older film like that because it is in B/W. Another favorite of mine is Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. To me it has the perfect balance of story line and aviation action. But again, it is a movie that has to be watched as a film while keeping in mind the era it was made. But all in all it tells it's story well and considering it was released in 1944, the special effects still hold up pretty well. Aside from Robert Walker, who always seemed to be over the top in his character, the acting is top notch as one would expect from Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson. Surprisingly there is a scene with Johnson and a young Robert Mitchum that shows some compassion for the enemy. Quite amazing for a wartime film. Spoiler alert, there is a love storyline in it, but it is well done and central to the Ted Lawson character. Edited March 9, 2014 by Rjel
II./JG27_Rich Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) The best ever is still to be made and the rights to the book have been bought. "A Higher Call". For those who have read it know that it is 75% about Franz Stigler so we'll see. It will have to be made right though!! Edited March 11, 2014 by II./JG27_Rich 1

novicebutdeadly Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 The best ever is still to be made and the rights to the book have been bought. "A Higher Call". For those who have read it know that it is 75% about Franz Stigler so we'll see. It will have to be made right though!! Def a great read, so is "I flew for the Fuhrer", but I wouldn't recommend Adolf Galland's book.
novicebutdeadly Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I can see people's view points on character developments. Some I agree with, others I don't.Too much character development can be very boring, for example the TV sci-fi series "Stargate Universe". 90% of the time we are watching some actor speak into a camera blabbing on about some crap (hence why alot of people didn't like it and the show got cancelled). It's def a fine balancing act between the re-telling of an historic event, and telling the human side of the story.
novicebutdeadly Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) Hmmm I had high hopes for Mighty 8th...that looked pretty cheap to me. Acting wise and special effects. Band of Brothers set the bar so high. I had a panic moment, thinking that they had started to make a movie based on the book "a higher call", thankfully it's not It's good to see the actors not needing oxygen, a B17 managing to keep level flight after another B17 rolls on top of it, actually the entire thing is just crap.... and they stole a bit from the movie Memphis belle. When the guy (somehow surviving without oxygen) walks through the radio room, the radio noise you hear sounds 100% identical to the scene in Memphis Belle after "mother and country" gets shot down. johncage Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Anyone got some suggestions? Been watching the 'Wings of the Luftwaffe' series today, Thought it to be.. ok, 'but than the americans came and turned the tide' where getting annoying, and now hope for a nice recommendetion. hate to break it to you, but from whichever perspective, the americans came and turned the tide.
Chuck_Owl Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 (edited) hate to break it to you, but from whichever perspective, the americans came and turned the tide. I hate to break it to you, but the USAF certainly didn't destroy the Luftwaffe on their own. The RAF and the VVS certainly did more than their part in that regard. It was a team effort and looking at the casualty figures of the Luftwaffe based on who they fought might actually surprise you. Edited March 24, 2015 by 71st_AH_Chuck
Finkeren Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Amen Chuck. Team effort was what won the war. No need bickering over who carried the biggest load or who 'turned the tide'.
II./JG27_Rich Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 still waiting for this russian film... Woh ..This looks like Hartmann almost. If it is that would be fantastic
II./JG27_Rich Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 From what I gather this film isn't patriotic so to speak and it can't find any backing in Russia. I may be wrong but the way the Luftwaffe pilots are depicted in the trailer I'm betting that's it.
