Nicob Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Especially for people who have experienced the game at different pings, at what point do you start noticing ping is having an affect on your gameplay? 1-50 ms 50-90 ms 90-140 ms 140-180ms 180-220ms 220-260ms 260-300ms 300-350ms 350-400ms 400+ ms I have a lot of data from internal tests but I am looking for your experiences. Of course remember that jitter and packet loss fps and many other factors also impact gameplay; I'm just looking for what your subjective experiences are at each range of those pings.
-TBC-AeroAce Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 I would start to notice around 100-150. But I can deal with it to about 200.
THERION Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Although having a very good internet connection (glass fiber ~380mb/380mb/5,8ms) I only join servers with green marked ping values, going from 20 up to 70. With these parameters I enjoy the best experience on gameplay, even on crowded servers. But I also noticed some serious lag when people with bad ping values join and play on these servers, even when the parameters mentioned above are given. This sometimes is a serious problem and gameplay becomes unpredictable. 1
CountZero Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Same as Therion, i have 40-80 ping to WoL and all is ok when i attack airplanes with same pings, but when your attacking guy whos from far and he has 200+ pings its a mess, and he warps like crazy and is veary unpredictable, especialy the more he moves controls. I played few times on servers where my ping was 300+ and it was unplayable, never try again. from clod and il-2 1946 i know up to 150ping to server i can play with no problems. and thats why the most popular servers should be based in USA east coast so most ppl would be able to have 150pings and it would be more better for all , then how its now with most popular servers located in EU, so its good when you play with eu guys but its mess in trimes when american or asian players join.
SCG_ErwinP Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 (edited) My ping is always ~ 220 in KOTA, ~ 250 inTAW, WOL & Berloga. My Internet connection is 30MB/15MB/15ms. My worst experience was in WoL and best experience was in KOTA. My location: Brazil Edited January 24, 2019 by 3./JG15_HansPhilipp
No_85_Gramps Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 Interesting topic about ping values. I'm normally ok up to 150 from the east coast of the US. But, more important, may be the trace route info. For instance, if I do a trace route to coconut's server it takes normally 16 or 17 hops to get there, most values are below 100 ms but after crossing the sea they tend to increase to over 100 ms. Occasionally I'll hit one node that reaches close to 200 ms, and a friend of mine in the UK, had one node hitting 300 ms. Didn't mean to hijack the thread just wanted to toss this info in. My UK friend has recently experienced a few disconnects which may be attributable to this data. I just pinged coconut's serve and the average time was 109 ms. I then did a trace route that took 16 hops with the slowest node coming in at 136 ms. So one individual node with a slow rate can impact the overall performance. Now the network experts can probably provide a better explanation.
Heckpupper Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 Considering BoX has client sided hit detection and so on, isn't it theoretically better to fly on servers that you have a high ping to?
Jade_Monkey Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 From the east coast of US, all main servers seem to have at least 100 ping. I'd say from 100 to 150 is fine.
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 (edited) Ok, as someone that has a high ping when playing on WOL (400ms) and a low ping when playing on local servers (70ms), let me explain my experiences over the last 4 years of flying online. Firstly, the difference between the two from my perspective. When attacking I see little to no difference in how people react to my attacks. The exception being if both of us have high ping. Then I see minor delays in the defending aircrafts response. This might mean that momentarily the underestimate my lead, but the true difference is seen when they maneuver as aggressive as possible and I don't get a completely smooth transition of that maneuver. Is it a significant difference - no not really. When defending, on against a player with low ping, and I have a low ping, vs either of us with a high ping, there used to be issues where you would need to overestimate the angles they had on you in the high ping situation. Did it make much difference - again no I don't think so, only in some minor occasions when you think they won't have a shot on you in a really tight dogfight but they do. Key difference I see in both situations is how quickly you see the impact of your hits registering on the other plane. Low ping combination vs low/high or high/high is visibly different. Next issue - packet loss. Now I used to suffer from low upload bandwidth up until 6 months ago. There are two issues with packet loss, random loss during normal gameplay and loss due to insufficient upload bandwidth. I suffered from the latter - when l would do something that generated a lot of upload traffic, like get hits on an enemy plane or the ground, that would cause problems with that data arriving to the server. The result was I would warp and typically get kicked. The other issue you see occasionally from other pilots, regardless of ping and that is packet loss during any other time. This could be due to issues with their service, their overuse of that service without knowing, or even just transmission issues along the internet that they have zero control over. The effect of which is a stuttering jolting plane. High ping can come with increased risk of this due to the number of hops through the internet that could cause transmission issues. But just because you have a fancy high bandwidth connection with low ping doesn't mean your connection will never experience issues. I see so many people chime in reporting "server" performance issues and claim it can't be them because they have low ping and all the bandwidth in the world. Networking is more complicated than that. Now with that all said, I fly and fight with and against my squadmates very frequently. Yet they always state my plane is moving smoothly and without warping at all times (since my internet upgrade). This game is very impressive when it comes to how it handles high latency. Not many other games allow someone with a 400ms ping to fly with others running a 200ms pings with such quality. But then a plane can only change direction so much in 300ms. (Ping is round trip time). Things that aren't up to scratch now is the issue with servers getting a backlog of events seen in the chatlog. Things that have improved greatly are the delays in seeing rounds fired from other planes compared to a few patches ago. 9 hours ago, No_85_Gramps said: I then did a trace route that took 16 hops with the slowest node coming in at 136 ms. So one individual node with a slow rate can impact the overall performance. Ignore the individual hop times. It can help you find the node in a path that might be causing you issue, but ping time is more important. Nodes may not always prioritise responses to traceroute requests and the return path from each hop may also not always be the same as that from your final ping destination.
