IckyATLAS Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 (edited) This town is from the Kuban region. Where towns in such a checkerboard format, and house and trees so identical? How realistic is such a town. Edited January 20, 2019 by IckyATLAS 1 2
HenFre Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 I do not think the town layouts are supposed to look exactly like in real life. They are modular builds that speed up the population process of the maps. But if you look at maps from present day Kuban you will see these square housing blocks in the towns.
Uufflakke Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 (edited) Yes, they were in such a checkerboard pattern. See for instance the related topic here: Edited January 20, 2019 by Uufflakke
1Sascha Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 Looks like a typical, post WW2 US suburb to me. At least at first glance it does... S.
danielprates Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 Planned cities usually look like that. I can't speak for any specific kuban map town, but I would imagine that in southern SU it was common to have brand new towns raised for the purpose of manning some collective farm or other large project. 1
Chief_Mouser Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 Look at WW2 era maps of the Kuban. It's easily possible to see that the towns were indeed gridded like that. Cheers.
SCG_OpticFlow Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 Maikop looks squared like that even on the current map: https://goo.gl/maps/Ney3bEa4ef52 1
ShamrockOneFive Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 After the revolution there was a lot of planned farms and cities built in the region and so you end up with this patchwork looking arrangement. Everything planned and set at right angles. I'm sure there's some simplification to make it work in the sim but there's definitely a realism here too.

IckyATLAS Posted January 20, 2019 Author Posted January 20, 2019 Ok. Got it. Thanks, I feel much better now ? 1

Maikop here and in the in-game picture in the OP look almost the same! You just have to twist the map clockwise, 120 degrees or so, to instantly see the resemblance to the OP screenshot. That says much about the love put into those BoM maps. It will be interesting to see the Bodenplatte map, where period pictures and maps are probably more available.
