looking for a mentor

Recommended Posts

I have just got this game still trying to figure out the in's and outs ect. As the title says I am looking for a mentor. Some one to help with configs flying  ect.  I am well into my 50's so not a kid. MY pc is is able to handle the game within vr. My controllers are ch flight stick (not the combat stick) ch pro throttle and pedals. I have both the htc vive and oculus. Looking for some one to help/teach me this game. I have never been an ace nor intend to become one. My reflex is not great due to age. How ever I aspire to be the best wing man in the game. My goal is to keep you the true ace alive by being the the best wing man. I don't care about my my kill count, just keeping you alive so you can do what you do. The sad part is I work weekends. So i'm only avalable tuesday through friday. I am a newbie so treat me as such. But with resepect. I only have the flying circus so it will be limited to it.

Hello and welcome Devkill!

This is a fun and challenging journey you've embarked upon. Let me assure you that most of us here aren't spring chickens anymore, so you will fit right in. I have to admit that I'm quite jealous, as I'm yet to try any VR application, so you're definitely ahead of the curve in that department.

Let me first direct you towards Requiem's Air Combat Tutorials Library, where you will want to watch the Pfalz D.IIIa tutorial video. It's a forgiving and potent plane for a beginner:

For 1-on-1 instruction, you will undoubtedly be able to find someone here, depending on your time zone and availability. If not, you could apply with a squadron, who usually offer integrated courses for beginners.

Here's a handful to get you started (most also still fly the older title Rise of Flight, as we wait for the full release of Flying Circus):

JG1: http://jg1.org/

US103: https://us103.enjin.com/

Jasta 2: http://www.jasta2.org/

Jasta 5: https://jasta5.org/

Salute and clear skies to you!

very nice setup , wingman maybe a bit hard in flying circus, if you want some stick time, feel free to join this discord channel , https://discord.gg/W9RV46p , not so formal, just a drop in center to fly FC in multiplayer ?

im on most days on FC runway standby, we fly most evening gmt, and we all just help each other out, more than happy to fly most days except today as need to go help a friend fix there car. its informal and just fly and have fun.

warning FC is addictive, eyeballs hanging out in VR goggles. but loving it.

Hey mate,

I haven't actually gotten Flying Circus (I think I'm waiting for the full release. I don't even know anymore...). Anyhow, I come from Rise of Fight.

I highly suggest watching Wagga'z wing's You Tube videos about various flight techniques and how to stay alive. They are made for rise if flight but I'm very sure they go hand in hand.

I will point you specifically to these videos here:

As I say, these are very informative videos and I highly suggest checking em out.

Salute!

Stumble.

I'd be happy to fly 1 on 1 with you if our schedules match.  I am no pro in the least.  Many guys here will shoot me down with no problem.  But I'm familiar with the game, controls, and general air combat. ?

Jump on GCF's discord for Flying Circus - there's usually a few of us hanging about, waiting for some action. https://discord.gg/W9RV46p.

Thanks for all the replies. I will look into the groups and watch the videos. Just flying around is awesome in vr. Still cant dog fight worth crap.I planed on playing tonight but my wife gave a honey do project. I am realy lucky she only ask those once every three months or so. On a side note I have tried both the Vive and Oculus. Normaly in cockpit type games the Oculus is much better. For some reason the vive seems to work better with frame rate ect. Not sure why. Ill just go with works best :).I have also noticed that alot come from ROF. Does it have native vr support? Would I be better getting that till FC gets done?

Hi Devkill,  I am also a complete noobie.  I just got last December my copy of "FC early-access" and like you I'm also flying under VR (a dream come true, don't you think?).

Have a look at this video,

It completely enligthened me on how I should be targetting.  I went from zero-kills to always-kill (at least on 1-1 single-player Ace dogfights) following Central's advice (using the three sights, to improve deflection shooting).  Playing under VR I think we have a distinct advantage, and that is that the aiming sights offer true 3-D depth information to our brains -  you'll have to contort yourself a bit frequently but make sure you align your dominant eye with the machine-gun's notch (A)  AND the aiming reticle (B). Also make sure you reload your guns frequently - more than once I found myself shooting with a single machine gun, and Central's advice on deflection shooting requires that the opposite machine gun to your chosen reticle is firing.

I also look forward to playing multiplayer someday, though I'm not confident with my formation flying skills  yet  :(

Have a great weekend!

If you can, gentlemen, I'd highly recommend popping along to one of the furballs held on Sundays as detailed in the threads started by GCF.

All, very good humoured, no one is there for any other reason than having fun.

Your skill level is of absolutely zero import.

Tip up, fly, get shot down, repeat. No drama.

You don't need quick reflexes to be an ace.  Flying smart, planning your maneuvers in advance, and being smooth on the stick will make you a very good pilot.

At the moment where all is about furballs you ain't need any formation skills.

Just give it a go. Everyone will welcome you.

Yup, just show up at the servers. There are no skills required and it is exhilarating (you'll get hocked). Sunday is coming, just show up at the mass dogfight event. People also tend to gather at early night (GMT) on JG1 or J5. Just jump in and ask for help when needed. People will help you.

ROF does not have VR support so they say, but FC is gearing up, especially when the D7 (very popular) and Dolphin arrives. You can say that pretty soon we will have a consistent daily crowd flying in multiplayer in Flying Circus (the Sunday event is already a success).

And age is not related. Some of the best aces in ROF are well past 50. And you already have a set of stick, throttle and pedals and tracking device (VR).

So you are good to go :dance:Just jump in.

Some of the worst fliers are over 50, too. I'm 60 this next birthday, a terrible shot, an awful pilot and I enjoy myself.
