SShrike Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 I have recently decided to give some of the 4K skins a try. I have been reading about adding the normal map and putting the skins in the folders. My question is this: Do I have to modify the normal map name each time I want to switch between the 4K and 2k skins?

Yup. the game will always look for name of plane_B Using a program like OvGME (a file swapper) can make the process less painful as you can simply switch in and switch out the normal maps before you start the game. Its not ideal but its not a bad compromise and lot easier/more foolproof than manually swapping normal maps all the time
SShrike Posted January 14, 2019 Author Posted January 14, 2019 (edited) Thank you. Is it safe to assume that once you go to 4K, you are not very likely to look at the 2k skins ever again and thus would never need to switch back? I have been trying to find a step by step guide for adding skins to the game that explains the normal map process but also the templates. I see many guides to making and modifying skins but nothing difinitive for adding skins. Most unsure of is the template aspect. What to do with it. Is it just for modifying? Templates are for making new skins, all you have to do is put .dds file in ---> IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\data\graphics\skins\"PLANE" ,and then ingame choose skin from "custom skins". If you would want to use 4k skins you'll need to download 4k normalmap as well (you'll find that in the same place as templates but you only need normalmap file) and put it here ---> IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\data\graphics\Planes\"PLANE"\Textures Backup if you intend to go back to 2k. 1
SShrike Posted January 14, 2019 Author Posted January 14, 2019 Great! Thank you for the reply and the information. Looking forward to testing some out and exploring the layers.
