hello

i am using creative 2.1 speakers  together with the sound blaster sound card , has anyone noticed any improvement for the engine sound and  fly by using a  5.1 speaker system ? any recommended brand ?

In general, if you want better sound, go with headphones.

i have 7.1 razor but i get tired of headphones over long  periods , very useful when someone is at home or late at night . i just want opinions before i purchase them .

I have a Creative Labs Inspire 7.1 system.

Which i only set up as 5.1, as the pc room is small.

i like the sound a lot with both Il-2 and my railway sims.

I was thinking about stereo headphones. Something like Audio-Technica ATH-M40X.

If you go for the speaker route, look for a receiver and passive speaker setup, plus a 10"-12" subwoofer. Such a subwoofer is maybe the only thing a pair of headphones can't really replace. But such a setup is expensive.

A receiver and passive speakers is way too expensive  just for the sim , amplifier and all , i find subwoofers distort the engine sound ,  i always hear a  a deep  hum in the background . On the active side  creative labs 7.1 is cheap and very good  ,  i've had the 2.1 all my life . On the soundblaster panel you get as far as 5.1 only though  and thats enough for me  , hate cables all over the place .

Does the game even output 5.1 sound? I haven't played with 5.1 sound too much so maybe I missed something, but when I did hook it up couple times to my 5.1 receiver I believe the game was outputting only stereo signal.

I use a set of headphones that do credible surround sound, not as good as distributed speakers though. If I turn my head the engine sound gets louder on the near side, if I shoot a rocket off one wing I hear it on the proper side and when someone makes a pass on me or a wing-man flies close enough I can pick out the direction by sound fairly accurately. All in all the game plays well with surround sound set ups. There is a little issue with the balance on the various channels but that might be an issue with the way I have things set up on my end.

Audio-Technica ATH-M40X

i looked into this HP for the first time and all models are available here but one big question is they dont  they mention 5.1 or 7.1 . Does it matter ? would it react anyway to different sounds from different directions ? Interesting thing is its much cheaper than Razor 7.1 latest model which this time is built on a steel frame . I paid 200 usd 2 years ago for my Razor model with a plastic frame which went to pieces last year and had to reinforce it with a metal frame sponge and duct tape  , also the mufflers are shot to pieces , next the sponges will start wearing off then there is nothing left except bare bone hardware . way too fragile . the new model which is steel frame , detachable cable ,  is 30 usd cheaper .

just tried the Corsair HS50 stereo HP 60 USD , good metal frame . I set my SB control panel as stereo  and the sound was very good in F1 looking forward ,nice engine rumble ,then i swung my head extreme left and again exttreme right and the sound was different for  each  position . I then tried the Razor 7.1 , control panel set at 5,1 and the sound was mediocre , just a hiss . the Creative 7.1 speakers is extremely cheap and i believe worth the try . I'm going to look around for a 5.1 set , compare . .  your watching movie too .

Those are stereo headphones, as I said.

Assuming you are using Windows 10, you enable spatial sound (there are two options: the free one - Windows Sonic for Headphones - or the paid one - Dolby Atmos for Headphones - about $10). Make sure there are no sound processing options active in the sound card software.

Hi all, this my contribution for hifi gamers is a research and test for years. With the configuration you will hear the sounds well divided were you are looking at, this work on a sound card installed on pci or pci x 1.1 in may case i used HT Omega 7.1

Optical Output 7.1 Gaming configure Windows 10

1) Open omega driver/ output mode spdif output (DTS or Dolby)
2) system output 8CH
3) Analog Output Digital Audio 48Khz or the greater setting
4) OK
5) windows speaker icon right click/ sounds /playback
6) Enable Speakers icon HTO Striker 7.1 ( Digital output  disable icon)
7) right click on Speakers icon HTO Striker 7.1 configure speakers/ select 7.1 surround configure all
8) Verify right click on Speakers icon HTO  Striker 7.1 properties/advanced/select greater audio quality option
9) OK

* On Home Theatre Receiver select pure direct

*** For motherboard stock sound card ***

1) Install motherboard card sound card drivers
2) Av Receiver or home theater must have multi channel inputs
(Front L R/ Rear L R/ Center and Subwoofer)
3) connect sound card outputs on receiver inputs 1.5m audio cables (3):
green output to front input
blue output to rear input
pink output to center and sub
(these depends on motherboard sound card output configuration)
4) open motherboard sound card program
5) enable speaker configuration 5.1 speaker
6) turn on receiver select multi channel input
7) on sound card program click on speakers to verify if theres output and well configure each channel
8) on sound card program /default format/ select 24 bits 192000hz(best audio quality)
9) on windows right click speaker icon/sounds/playback/speaker icon enable it/
configure speaker 5.1 run all the configuration

* This configuration will process all audio on the pc separating 5.1 on games and movies, on the receivers surround options will not work.

* If you play music on this configuration only front L R will work, with sound card on pci pciex connect via optical will work 5.1 and surround modes.
