Info for Potential New Rift/Vive Users

I have had my Oculus Rift CV1 for approximately a year now and fly with it almost daily for an hour+, both IL2 and DCS.

My Rift has performed flawlessly and I still enjoy its use immensely, even though much criticism has been leveled at most all the current VR HMDs for the screen door effect and lack of clarity.

I can honestly state that I have never found the screen door effect or the clarity issue to be even a minor problem and in all reality I don't even notice either as being a difficulty

I heartily recommend the Rift and also the Vive as well as some of the other HMDs for anyone wanting to go VR with minimal startup cost.

I was always hoping that Oculus would come out with an upgraded Rift HMD, but in spite of rumors and innuendos that just doesn't seem to be forthcoming, at least not in the foreseeable future. .

Consequently, I  have ordered a PIMAX 5K+ hoping to upgrade my VR flying experience to the next generation HMD and from all reports I can expect a moderate increase in clarity, a lessened screen

door effect (but not completely removed) but with the major benefit being a much larger FOV (field of view).  This to me personally, is quite  important as I fly from a

non swiveling chair and I don't have a satisfactory method to really look around fully or to check six and while the Rift view is good it is quite similar to flying while wearing a dive mask. .

:good:

I am with you on the Rift, next month will mark two years I have been using mine - and like you, on a daily basis. I also use it for both IL-2 and DCS , along with a few other VR games I enjoy very much as well.

I absolutely love it and would not game without it.

I am still going to hold out for a second gen from Oculus, at some point I may change ships if it gets too long. I have a feeling we will see something toward the end of this year or early next year. I look for Oculus to present their next Rift device at Oculus Connect later this year.

I look forward to hearing you like your new Pimax unit.

Interested see how you feel about the Pimax when you get it.

I've had VR since the DK2's came out.

However my main sim is RoF, so VR was just an occasional novelty for me.

I do like VR, but I fly mostly online and also from a dedicated pit of sorts with a fixed chair. Which makes checking 6 difficult or anything outside of 180 forward view to be honest.

Now we have FC, I plan to use my CV1 more

So how you find the Pimax and how much it improves clarity and FOV over the CV1will be interesting. If it works well for you the Pimax might be my next move and what pushes me into the "only VR" crowd.

Again as a rift user, no complaints here. OK one of the earphone packed in, but I use wireless headphones, so it`s a non issue. I`m going to wait for the CV2, at least for this year. Pimax I feel, are not worth the money, lots of stories of shoddy and poor/broken headsets. Those lads will only be a flash in the pan and will disappear once the big boys bring on the next gen hmd`s.

Unfortunately there has only been one 2nd Gen headset to hit the market in the past 2/3 years and that was the Vive-Pro, which sells for more than the Pimax 5K+ HMD.

I do hope "The Big Boys" that your referenced and specifically OCULUS, come out with a spectacular 2nd gen HMD but so far they aren't even acknowledging plans for a unit that would be applicable for flight simmers to use.   I fear we are a niche market and that "The Small Boys" are our only hope for the future while "The Big Boys" pursue the wider public VR markets of Video watching, Augmented Reality and non-tethered applications such as the Oculus GO.

I would call the Vive Pro more of a Gen 1.5, Odyssey as well.

It`s just a case of waiting I think, 2019 will give us a better idea of how the market is. Vive have a new eye tracking headset and we`ll see what becomes of that. I`d be happy with the quality of the rift, wired, 4k res, and a better FOV for ~450/500 euro mark. Cheaper if we could use the existing outside tracking and our current sensors/touch. Eye tracking and foveated rendering would be a big bonus and worth extra.

Vive pro is way overpriced for what it is imo.

I really hope yours and dburne's optimism is borne out in fact  and if Oculus ever does produce a 2nd Gen unit that we as simmers can use, I will be their first purchaser as I am

completely sold on the quality of their product.

Well think about it.

Oculus Go was released before Christmas.

Oculus Quest will be released in the Spring.

What else would they work on next?

My "guess" would be a reveal of the next Rift at Oculus Connect in the Fall, with a release of early 2020. Or even a Christmas 2019 maybe.

I'm sure Oculus is a quite a bit like Apple or Micosoft and one can't really speculate what they are working on, they all seem to prefer

developing completely new ideas for an evolving marketplace rather than upgrading existing products.   However, it never hurts to hope.

Seems to me Facebook is trying to force Oculus down a different route. I'm not holding out for a update for CV1.

I'm keeping an eye on the competition.

WMR is picking up momentum, especially with the Samsung HMD and Pimax looks promising too.

It all depents on what you notice as your most negative point, for me it was the SD effect on the vive and rift, not the limited FOV and not the godrays. While the €1000,- Vive pro and Pimax5k was to expensive so after the $300 Black friday deal I went for the lesser SD effect from the O+ .

For me it was the lack of SDE and price, maybe for others this could be complete different. Only advice I can give; go to an VR arcade hal and try it.
