Rjel Posted January 6, 2019 Posted January 6, 2019 Did the 9th Air Force follow the practice of the 8th in placing the U.S. Stars and Bars under both wings of the P-47 Thunderbolt? If so, did the practice continue for the duration of WWII? Also, on the fuselage is a data stencil that features the U.S. Army Model designation and the A.A.F. serial number that corresponds with each particular A/C. My question applies to the line above written as "Project No." I've seen a couple of pictures with numbers after the period. But only a couple and both were difficult to read. This line is also featured on P-51s sometimes. Some data stencils do not feature this line at all. My question is, was there only a single number connected to the Project No. or did it change with each new model revision as they entered the production line? None of my books or magazines have any information about this. Any help or direction to information would be most appreciated.
