Recommendation for an upgrade...

Tired of battling with FPS down to 12 when approaching ground targets, so it is about time to see what I can upgrade.

 

My specs are:

CPU
Intel Core i5 4670K @ 3.40GHz
Motherboard
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. Z87-K (SOCKET 1150)
RAM
8,00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 799MHz
Graphics
DELL U2412M (1920x1200@59Hz)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 (ASUStek Computer Inc)

 

I believe the bottleneck is the Graphic card, so any recommendation there?

And I'm not talking state of the art, nor the tip of a Jetfighter, but somewhere in the area of max 380USD / 335EUR

That’s right. The GTX 660 is quite weak. A GTX 1060 or RX 570 will be roughly twice as powerful and well within your budget. 

 

The single-channel DDR3 at rather low frequency is not ideal, but the graphics card is most concerning. Throw in a 2 x 8GB DDR3 at 2400MHz or so for a little boost in CPU-bound situations and better overall system responsiveness when using a lot of memory.

 

If you feel like overclocking, take the 4670K to 4 GHz or more for some easy performance gains once you’ve upgraded the graphics card.

No point in getting the fastest RAM for Haswell. The gains from faster RAM (same quantity) are negligible, unless we are talking about the integrated graphics and it's not the case here.

 

You could add another stick of 8GB of RAM (same specifications with the one you have - so DDR3 1600,  but also check the latency and voltage; or even identical module if possible), but as Mitthrawnurudo said, that GTX 660 is the major bottleneck in your case. You could go for a GTX 1060 (in which case you must make sure it's a 6GB card and not a 3GB version), but maybe you could stretch your budget to a GTX 1070 (and keep the existing RAM).

 

Some benchmarks to give you a general idea about the relative performance of some graphics cards:

 

GTX 660 vs. GTX 1060 (probably 6GB version)

 

GTX 660 vs. GTX 1070

GTX 1060 vs. GTX 1070

 

GTX 660 vs. RX 570

 

GTX 660 vs. RX 580

 

RX 570 vs. GTX 1060

 

RX 580 vs. GTX 1060

 

If you go for an AMD RX 570 or RX 580, get the 8GB version.

There seems to be a huge difference on the 1070's too. 

Prices goes from 375EUR to 535EUR. 

Is the difference that big on the 1070 cards, or is it just the price which is different?

I initially misunderstood your post.

 

So you can get GTX 1070 cards with prices in the 375-535 euro range?

 

There are some differences between cards (such as better VRMs, better coolers; and useless things such as RGB lights). But all should run stable at non-overclocked settings.

I would skip the SLI/Crossfire option. Certainly with entry level gaming cards.

 

His motherboard only has Crossfire support anyway (no SLI).

Funny.. i replaced a gtx 580 (!) with a similar 1070 8 gig card two months ago.

If things turn out like with my rig, you should be in for quite a nice surprise performancewise...
