Contemplating the move to VR, is my CPU up to it?

Forgive me if this has been asked before, or is in another thread that I haven't seen. I am contemplating the investment into VR.

I currently enjoy 1920x1080p resolution on a 24 inch 144hz monitor. I have the game on ultra settings, with full distance and maximum shadows. I get 120 + Fps in most single play (offline) scenarios, and love the scenery and graphics in game.

My question is this: I currently have an intel i5 8400 CPU, which although the base clock speed is only 2.8Ghz, it runs a single core at 4.0Ghz and the other five cores around 3.5 to 3.8Ghz.

Is that CPU powerful enough- and does it have enough core speed to run VR smoothly?

Thanks for your help :)

Kind regards,

MDS1

Yeah, that's plenty mate. You'll be at 90fps if nothing much is going on with dips to 45fps with ASW (if on Rift) during combat.

There is a VR compatibility test to determine if your rig is strong enough for VR.

It tests for Oculus Rift but the results would apply to all brands of VR headsets.

Scroll down to "Oculus Compatibility Test" -https://www.roadtovr.com/how-to-tell-pc-virtual-reality-vr-oculus-rift-htc-vive-steam-vr-compatibility-tool/

Check out the Samsung Odyssey Plus -  https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/hmd/windows-mixed-reality/hmd-odyssey-windows-mixed-reality-headset-xe800zba-hc1us/

Take a look at these results from the tests discussed in this thread. As you know, the i5-8400 is far from ideal because its low clock speeds do not provide good single-thread performance.

Although the benchmarks do provide some hints about the expected performance, it really depends on your personal preferences. No doubt some people enjoy VR, even with inferior CPUs. If smoothness and high settings are what you're hoping for, it may be quite disappointing, however.

you wont have any problem with your setup, I have a similar system. it is easy to get decent graphic/performance with a  Rift.

Thanks for the input Fellas, especially the information links. Very helpful, thank you.

We will see if all these positive advices are valid, as I’m running the same Vcard only a i7-7700k and I have faster 16gb RAM. Just in a single quick mission, alone, I have to use an overclock for all these 3 components to achieve a decent, but still fluctuating Frametime on both CPU and GPU.

My ingame settings are now being forced in using the “low” tab. For my 60hz monitor I could set everything on max. OK it was locked to 60fps limit, but these 60fps were showing a straight line, when monitoring.

VR in Il2 is eating so much performance that I still think for VR you do need the, new to be release 7,5Ghz i12-9999k  &  RTX5080ti  ?
