Developer Diary, Part 53

This weekends flying, relative to AI AAA, has me looking forward to being able to select AI skill when setting up a quick mission and set gun convergence ranges on our aircraft.

The AI movement around the various gun positions is pretty darn good and the weapon articulation is very nice.  I half expected to see the breach open and ammo men reload when I saw the AAA barrels recoiling

and the systems moving under the stresses of firing for the first time.  Given that this is a flight simulation and work on those things that contribute directly to that experience...I'm interested in seeing if there are plans to have moving (walking/running) troops in the simulation at some point in development and how the ground dev team will handle non-mounted infantry movements if there are to be any. (i.e. possibly the plan is to have all motorized/mechanized movement and troops will only appear on weapons systems or in static defensive positions.???...)

I just noticed the German planes do not have Swastikas and have instead some kind of PC symbol, is it not 2014? If 777 is trying to be so PC just use the Native American symbol for Whirling Log as it is similiar.

We can have so much violence on the boob tube but yet depicting something historical is shunned upon.

Icky,

Here's a link on a USA Searchlight/AAA Unit during WWII...good info on how they did it  http://www.skylighters.org/introduction/

Read also that some of the searchlight units put out 800 million candle power..... I'll see if I can dig up some pilot experiences at around 10,000 ft (3000m) AGL when hit buy these lights.

Here's an interesting report done in 1943 on the Organization of German Air Defenses... http://www.lonesentry.com/articles/ttt/german-antiaircraft-defense-flak.html

..one quote from http://www.junobeach.org/e/4/can-tac-air-bom-ger-e.htm

"Bombers could also encounter another anti-aircraft system, maybe the most formidable of all. Radar-controlled searchlights swept across the night sky, suddenly lighting up and zeroing in on an enemy aircraft. As soon as a searchlight found a target, others, manually controlled, were turned on, enclosing the incoming bomber in a cone of light that followed it relentlessly. Pilots, blinded by the searchlights, made desperate attempts to escape the light beams. If they were not successful, the trapped bomber became an easy prey for the Flak or for night fighters.Since bombing operations were conducted by night, pilots, navigators and bombers relied on electronic devices to find their way, to identify targets and to detect enemy aircraft in the dark. German and British engineers tried to outdo one another in their attempts to improve navigation systems and foil enemy detection systems."

It isn't PC, it's illegal to display the swastika in many territories around the world.

Actually I am not sure that this is true anywhere else than in Germany. Many countries have some kind of legislation about this, but usually it's just forbidden as political symbol or if used to incite hate etc, not in other context. Anyway it is as it is.

And France and Hungary.

In Hungary: "rule specifies that the symbols are banned if they upset peace and order." About France I don't know, but I am sure that we have some people in here who do.

Might be me but I really don't understand this trim 'issue' at the moment. Personally I just automatically hold the joystick wherever it's needed to fly the damn plane.

IF and I mean if I've actually got time to trim a plane to fly nice and level then no doubt some sneaky 109 or flak battery is going to really spoil my day.

If the thought of flying from A to B with a bit of weaving and ducking isn't your style or you have limp wrists then engage autopilot and be done with it.

So yes trim would be nice at some time, but I'd more rather see QMB or MP before trim.

Perhaps because there many different controller setups with many different levels of tension/force required to move them, along with different strengths and styles of the players that are moving them, along with preferences as well...

Personally I find not being able to trim makes it much harder to aim with precision as I am already fighting the sensitive pitch and yaw axis, along with having to hold a specific amount of downforce on the stick to keep it somewhat level...

Now as far as which comes first during the early access period, I personally do not care, as I know it is coming and will be in the final release.

Just pointing out for some at least , it is an annoyance/inconvenience...

IL2 Original (or after a few addons) didn't have swastikas either, unless you enabled it in the cfg or made one yourself!

I just googled it, that's all I have.

It's just silly that a swastika must be displayed. You'll never see it when you're engaged with another plane, you might barely glance at it when in formation if you're in an online squadron that does that, but for the most part it will go unnoticed except in screenshots that intentionally show the aircraft in a neutral setting. And then, no one cares. No one sees your screenshots, only you and maybe a few others care. I google images of planes frequently, and screenshots show up which I just don't care about so I skip over them. No one goes "wow, that's one sweet 190 with one AWESOME SWASTIKA!" of a game when they  are looking for a real 190. It's not being PC, it's just respecting other country's legal terms - and it should be the most respected when the country that has it illegal is the country from which it's origin as being an image of evil it arose from.

I see it this way, simulations need to be as historically accurate as possible.Since I know now the player can add the "evil Swastika" it understandable as why they choose not to implement it in the game for legal reasons.

That hurts my brain. A swastika doesn't make it an air combat simulation, and your statement with the quotes around the evil swastika clearly shows you don't know just how much pain it caused millions of people and to this day brings back terrible memories to families across the globe.

As others have said, they have a legal requirement in certain economically powerful nations to adhere to. Do you want them risk a potentially large fine if they are caught selling or being able to sale in those territories?

There will be the ability to re-paint anyway, so I am sure the Swastika will be available in some form.

Wonderful, now we're on the overly-beaten-to-death topic of swastikas.

Dear friends!

As you remember we also promised a unique skin for IL-2 to everyone who preordered IL2BOS before September 1st. And now we suggest you to make your choice and decide what it will look like. Please, put your suggestions in this thread starting today and running through February 24th.
Does not matter if the skin you suggest is historical or not - it's up to you to choose the style. After that, on February 26th the final poll will be started.
