Pros & Cons of these 1440p monitors?

Hi Chaps,

I ended up upgrading to a GTX1060 (thanks for the advice regarding that). I was planning to get a 1080p setup but I've got the IL2 bug again and am thinking of getting a GTX1070. If so, I have 3 choices for good monitors:

  1. ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR 27" Nvidia G-SYNC Monitor , 2560x1440 , 1ms ,165Hz, 350 cd/m² ($nz1,099) incl Eye Care (blue light)
  2. Acer Predator XB271HUA 27" Nvidia G-SYNC, 2560X1440 , 1ms , 165Hz ($nz848), 350 cd/m²
  3. ASUS ROG Strix XG32VQ 31.5" Curved Freesynch , 2560X1440 , 4ms, 144hz, 300 cd/m² ($nz979)

It would be great to have 31.5" but would the 4ms response time make too much of a difference? And if I understand, Nvidia cards don't do Freesynch, which would likely "sink" that one.

Of (1) & (2), from what I can tell the only spec difference is the low blue light "Eye Care", which is appealing if it works. I don't have any experience with it though to know if it's worth paying 30% more.

Any thoughts oh wise ones? ?

That's correct. However, the extra cost generally associated with G-Sync means that it's not always worth it. Blur Busters has some good articles that may help you understand certain display technologies, including G-Sync.

For the majority of gaming scenarios, it would make next to no difference. All three are high-end gaming monitors with solid performance. However, beware of the different panel technology types, e.g., VA or TN. The images could look somewhat different despite the similar specs; reviews are really the only way to find out.

No, it's probably not worth it. Again, it's possible that there are other differences, however.

I would go with this one from Acer instead of the TN panel one.

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MONACN92700/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-27-WQHD-Nvidia-G-SYNC-Gaming

I Went from 1080p TN to 1440p IPS and I could not go back to TN panel, no matter how fast it is.

When I was in the market for G-Sync monitor I bought Asus one with TN panel , I sent it back after one day. I just couldn't accept washed out colors and havy grain coating (anti-glare).

I went for Acer Predator with IPS panel and I am vert happy with it, only problem was early batches build quality. I had to return two monitors before I was sent a perfect unit.

I now fly on a 55" TV but that monitor gave me many years of great gaming.

I'm running 3440x1440p with a GTX 970 and get 70+ FPS most of the time in Il-2. So i think you'll be fine with your 1060 on 2560x1440 and can probably save that money or spend it on a better monitor.

I personally wouldn't consider a monitor with TN panel or without G-Sync (but then i don't expect to switch to AMD anytime soon). VA panels are OK but i pefer IPS myself.

Thank you Banzai for being so specific! It's in my shopping cart waiting for the Xmas sale. ?

Interesting! I'll get the monitor only first then and see how it goes. Maybe with a bit of overclocking it might be enough until a full upgrade to VR. Roughly what graphics settings do you use to get 70'ish FPS? You've got a significantly better CPU than my old i7-2600k. Do you overclock?

4670 should not be that much better than a 2600, which is still very fast for its age. Also, I would not recommend upgrading from a 1060 to a 1070. It's just too much money for the increase in performance. Better to wait for a better upgrade opportunity. Perhaps when the 2060 is released?

Blue light filtering can be done in software.

I also own XB271HU. Actually, both AOC and Asus (ROG) use the very same panel. Just the frame and other bits are a bit different. IIRC the Acer has the best price.

This IPS is as fast as they come, about 10ms average lag input makes for professional gaming if you need it. Couple that with G-Sync and IPS and you have a great monitor.

Also correct on the early batches. This screen has been available for two years now, and most of the quirks have been ironed out. Latest one is related to the HDMI output and short screen shutdown - only in case you also have a HDMI connected, but it may have something to do with Nvidia drivers lately. All in all, not worth the hassle of not getting it.

Recommendation from me as well. ?

I had the ACER Predator for more than one year and half and I could not be happier but I would go with the IPS version. The colours look great being IPS and honestly the 4 ms input lag is not noticeable at all and I would not trade it off for 1 ms and TN panel with worse colours. The base is solid, fully adjustable and the monitor includes some USB ports which have been useful to me in order to connect the TrackIR.

By the way, Gsync is great, sure you pay it (and you pay it well) but it is worth it. A monitor is something that will last you for some generations and a good investment on it is mandatory in my opinion.

If you're going 1440p, be sure to get atleast a 27" monitor. And I agree that IPS is the only way to go. Not only does it give better colors, but also better viewing angles.

I would spend the money to get 27"-32" size, 1440p, IPS panel, 144Hz, and G-Sync. If you check all them boxes, you'll be happy for years to come.

Exactly my monitor, a great match for the GTX 970 I'm using!

Which model if I may ask ? I have AOC AG352UCG and its nice but Ive started considering a replacement in a year or less. In any case Ive been very much interested in gaming on a large TV panel, question is how is the experience on it ? Is it smooth ?

I use a LG OLED C7. It has decent input lag for a TV and it has an option to run 1080p at 120hz.

I use 1080p 120hz instead of 4K in 60hz. It's smooth and looks OK , there is a bit of shimmering but I am used to it now.

Overall I am able to fly on Berloga for example and get 20-30 kills ,I don't think input lag makes me less competetive.

Hi Guys,

I use a LG 32gk850 and could not be happier. Before that i had an Dell s27 which was fine, but i felt that 27" was lacking something for me. 32" is just a bit bigger without compromising dpi to much.

And it's 144 hz. Which is a must for me. For Flight-sims 60hz is ok i thin, but i also play some fast paced shooters like Doom and 60 hz is not an option.

For a 2560x1440 monitor used on a desk, in my opinion 27" diagonal is the best size. Optimal pixel density (optimal pixel size) for a viewing distance of about 60-80cm. I would not go with larger screens at that resolution, unless the viewing distance is increased. Not smaller screens, either, for that resolution.

I was more thinking of stuff like ghosting, blur, colors vs your monitor, etc. Also, since its OLED did you notice any signs of  temporary image retention or burn-in stuff. Ive heard there is such possibility on OLED.

Personally Id opt for 4k, without V-sync and some tricks like Fast sync it should be smooth as well.

No ghosting, no blur. Oled has a great response times. Colors are great. Not much banding when you look at the sky.

There is temporary image retention but it goes away once you start looking around.

I seem to have some burn in or other panel defect. It looks like dirty patch in the middle of the screen and there are horizontal lines going through the screen. They are only visible in bright scenes, like looking at the sky and moving your head in-game.

I don't know if they were always there because I only started to notice them when I started to play BoX on that telly.

I had it for six months before that and never noticed it when watching movies or playing games on my PS4.

This is the only issue I have with this TV, I am not sure how it happened because I would never leave it on for more than 10 minutes if I was not using/watching it.

Ok, thanks for the response Banzai. I'm thinking of getting LG OLED 55C8, its a 55" screen so will have to get a proper seating for the stick and all other peripherals. Track Ir and all stuff work fine ? Im assuming one sits considerably further than with normal monitor.

My TrackIR camera is not mounted on the TV.

I have a small table for my joystick, throttle and keyboard. That's where I have my TrackIR camera. It's attached to the table on a ruler , this way it's high enough.
