I am very curios how you can have that running in the backround without knowing it.

So am I, I must have put it on just after building the PC and overclocking it never thought about it since just gathered that after stopping it once tested that was it but obviously starts each time I boot the PC - what an idiot

Will remove it and see if that helps the situation with the frame rates.

I have Prime 95 myself, but it certainly does not load at startup, only when I manually select and load it.

Get rid of that issue along with making sure vsync is off in your game graphics settings, I have a feeling you will see a difference.

Prime95 is a downloadable tool to stress your system.  As IL2 is hugely CPU dependent if you cripple the CPU then you'll cripple FPS.

Delete it from your system then retry - that is a huge contender for the problem.

thanks Guys, fingers crossed that's the problem. I'm out tonight so will not get chance to check it but will be one one of the jobs to do tomorrow!

Thanks again

There's no way prime95 even starting up at start up was running stress testing without any user input, there's no start up mode that makes it run tests automatically. Wouldn't get your hopes up.

Normally no, but he stated it was using 69% cpu background task.

Something odd going on there with it. Best to make sure it does not run period.

69% background task, should be possible to identify which program or service uses all the resources. if not, clean install.

Unless I misread him he already did - Prime 95.

Your right dborne I did say Prime 95.

just can't think how it's running if you say it can be only started manually, I'm sure when I checked on Google it is possible to have it running at start up and you have to manually stop it,  having said that I have read that much trying to figure out how to get FPS higher I could be thinking of something else - and as you get older you do tend to get forget things! :o:

Lets hope it works but I have to say it's getting closer to that full install of W10 - what joy.:tease:

You may be getting close to that, but I would not throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet...

Thanks for that dburne

just found this (hope the link works)

Look like it can have Prime95 start at startup, maybe I did that and never turned it off!!

Yeah, when you get it to stop or remove it, just check task manager prior to trying the game, make sure you have minimal necessary programs running.

Think lean and mean.

;)

Don't forget to check in game options and make sure vsync is not enabled also.

I see you only achieve 1986 in the CPU Single Threaded. This is too low for an 8700K overclocked to 5Ghz. You should achieve around 3000.

Look at the tab called "STMark vs OC" in the test result page: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gJmnz_nVxI6_dG_UYNCCpZVK2-f8NBy-y1gia77Hu_k

It could be due to have running the Prime95.

Try to run the passmark test after removing Prime95. If you still have around 2000 then the problem should be somewhere else.

One of the reason is that your CPU could not be running at 5.0GHz, It seems like it is running at the minimum 8700K which is 3.7GHz.

To verify that you can run the free tool MSI Afterburner to trend the CPU frequency in realtime (at 200 ms sampling for example). You can also trend other variables like CPU temp, GPU load, GPU temp, etc. Run the MSI afternuner (https://www.msi.com/page/afterburner) at the same time that you run the Passmark and check CPU freq.

There isn't really anything wrong with that. In fact, it's good to perform a clean installation occasionally.  Even if you're very careful with your computer, it is quite possible to end up in a state with small problems that are just about impossible to troubleshoot.

If a performance problem does't go away with a game reinstall or a few quick setting changes, I immediately jump to a fresh Windows installation with the absolute minimum software, e.g., graphics driver. Otherwise, there are far too many variables to consider. Admittedly, having a few spare SSDs for testing is helpful. However, the process doesn't take long regardless.

Thanks guys should have time this afternoon to look into it will delete Prime95 and retest and hopefully get better results.

Thanks for all the advice.

I have turned off Prime95 and stright away my fans slowed down and I had a feeling that was the problem all along just ran a test again,  and getting 3022 in CPU single thread just like Chiliwili said I should be getting.

Just cannot believe I never remembered to turn Prime off after I'd ran it first so everytime for the last few months it's been running in the background - what an idiot I feel.

Anyway ran the game and it's running at 90fps and drops down to 55ish but it is so much smoother compared to how it was.

Now I shall tweak it to get it looking a little better.

Thank you all so much for your help and ideas trying to figure all this out, I feel like Christmas has come early!!

What a great time to sort it out, finally finished work for Christmas now I wonder what I can do with my spare time, mmm let me think....

Cheers

your poor processor ?

Regarding settings, do you play MP or SP?

Jred yeah it’s seems to be vert stable I know people say run Prime95 for 24 hour but thought I’d try 6 months ?!

 Ironk79

I play SP until I feel confident to go MP tried it in the old IL2 sturmovik but just ended up being a target for everyone else.?

If you have setting that would improve the Rift that would be great I have tweaked parts like graphic setting from lefuneste and Fenris Wolf etc but others are always worth trying - guess it’s  just a matter of finding the right setting your comfortable with.

thanks.
