Voyager Posted December 6, 2018 Posted December 6, 2018 Having a bit of an odd problem; I can't seem to focus the reticle in the columnated sight. I haven't had this issue in other VR sims yet, and I believe I've got my eye distance adjusted correctly, so not sure what's causing it. I'm running in the P-40, using the Occulus Rift. Thoughts on what could be causing this and how to fix it?
JonRedcorn Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 You need to "look through" the sight, don't focus on the sight itself. Look beyond it. Also you can use luftense's 3d migoto mod that disables the sight in one eye so you can use it easier.

This is not the only VR flight sim I play that has columnated sights. The issue seems be the sight needs a very narrow interoccular distance to be in focus at infinity, while my actual IOD is at the max setting for the headset (I have a big head)

Honestly, I'd rather figure out what is wrong and fix it. Thinking a test case would be to align the aircraft with the right eye pipper on or very close to a distant point and seeing if the left eye reticle is aligned to the right one over the target, then, if not, capture a video clip sweeping my head from a right eye alignment to a left eye alignment. We'll need to find an air field with a tall enough tower that you can see it with the plane's tail on the ground. The other alternative is to use one of the Battle of Kuban planes with a nose wheel, but I don't have that one yet. 1
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 P40 sight is not really big enough to use with both eyes unless you had a really really small IPD. Try the Spitfire or P47 sights.

At first I tried to reduce spacing of cross between eyes but it is not technically possible for Ru and Us sights and it make you shoot beside target for the others...So the only way to use sight in VR is to close one eye or use my mod that will disable sight for one eye.
-332FG-Gordon200 Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 In order to sight with your dominate eye in VR you need to adjust tour seat position either left or right to properly align behind the sight. To do this you need to make the adjustment in 2D. Start a quick mission in the plane of your choice and press P to unpause. Using the Delete, End, Pg Down, Insert, Home and Pg up keys obtain the desired view you want and press F10 to save it as default. Afterwards you only need to press the number pad 5 to return to your position. My preference is to have only the right half of the sight visible with both eyes in 2D. When in VR that puts the sight directly in front of my dominate eye. As I only fly in VR I went through the entire set of planes in 2D and did a QM with each to set my seat position and save it with F10.

Try the Spitfire or P47 sights. Was able to get a long range look through it and this seems to be the root cause of what I was seeing. When I was able to find a sufficiently far away object and focus on that, the sight worked fine. It was a bit of a trippy optical effect, as I apparently mostly process through my right eye so the ring almost appeared to be hovering outside the sight. So to recap, the sight lined up; the viewing space is just small enough that I can't focus on the reticle by itself, possibly because the parts don't link with a big eye distance, but with a far target to focus on, they work just fine. Testing for the win!
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 Usually for people new to the gun sights in VR, I will suggest trying the 109 first, as it forces you to realise that you need to have sights lined up behind one eye (for all but the spitfire and P47), and let the gunsight image be interpolated in the brain. (Just like a holo sight on a rifle, keeping both eyes open). Once you grasp the concept, then usually you are good to go.
