Perhaps some knowledgeable techmate can answer...

I am running out of USB slots so have bought a usb 3.0 hub. Is it ok to use this unpowered with, say, a VKB Glad and a HOTAS throttle unit/Saitek Quadrant?

I suppose I could 'suck it and see' but I have always found my Virpil Techmates helpful!

Won't hurt to try it out, if you already have it. But if your devices start to have random disconnects, you'll know why. I ended up going with a powered USB, because it was necessary with my X56 throttle.

You could move some low amperage (low power) devices on the USB hub and free USB 3.0 ports on the motherboard.

Powered would certainly be better.

All you would need  is 2.0 powered hub for those devices.

Flight gear in general are rather power hungry in my experience. I've had a lot of troubles with unpowered USB hub and saitek gear in the past.

I'm confident one joystick and one throttle on your 3.0 HUB will do just fine, but expect to have issues if you want to plug more things on it (rudder pedals and so on...)

Powered USB hub arent much more expensive, you can get a good one for around 20€ wich is very cheap considering the price of what you are going to plug on it.

I´m also using a powered USB hub - works without a problem.

As you´ve already bought an unpowered one just try it out and see if it works - or as already suggested, use your flight gear on the board itself and low powered stuff on the hub to try if this would work better.

I love this forum everyone is really helpful! The USB 3.0 I have is powered, so that's alright. Thank you VirPils and Techmates! Salute

I have a 7-port powered USB 2.0 hub, and it was only $20 or so. Works great. Flight control devices are fairly low bandwidth, and I have throttle, throttle quadrant, stick, pedals, mouse and keyboard plugged in no issue. Webcam doesn't like the hub (needs more bandwidth apparently) so that goes straight to the back of the PC. Works great and if any of my peripherals needs a reboot I can just replug them all by replugging the hub.

I'm curious why you first said your USB hub is unpowered. Were you planning to use it without plugging in the USB hub power supply?

Hi Seb,

It's just a case of adding a plug board as I don't have a spare socket, so enquired about its use un powered.

:)
