pilotpierre Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I remember crash landing in snow in the original IL2 and it was quite spectacular and very realistic. Any chance of replicating that in BoS?
Flanker15 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I don't understand, it's already better than original il-2 isn't it? Maybe because you played il-2 way back in 2001?
pilotpierre Posted February 13, 2014 Author Posted February 13, 2014 Well admittedly it was a long time ago, and at 67 my memory is probably suspect but I remember the wheels up slide going for longer, with more snow dust flying around and snow being built up in front on the stopped a/c??? Will do a few more tests this weekend with the il2 as that is the most vivid memory I have.
FuriousMeow Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Snow didn't build up in front of the crashed A/C. There were particles that kicked up, just like on the dirt as well, but it didn't build up. It quickly disappeared as the plane moved along. There were no differences between grass, dirt or snow in terms of length of slide. I'm thinking rose colored glasses got ya on that one, it wasn't anymore glamarous than the current gear up landing in BoS.
pilotpierre Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) Well I'm still not convinced. BoS has been up for the past few hours here (a mistake as Jason has admitted on another thread) and I have just filmed numerous dead stick landings on snow with both a/c and its not as realistic as I remembered it. However, I grudgedly accept rose coloured glasses may be in play. Edited February 14, 2014 by pilotpierre
FuriousMeow Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) Well, fire up Il2. You'll see it's not what you think you remember. It did not have any difference in terms of skid difference regarding terrain type such as snow vs dirt vs sand vs grass. As a matter of fact, a plane would skid less over snow as the snow would build up faster and easier creating large snow packs that woud slow the plane down faster than on other materials - especially hard packed dirt. This title is also not anywhere near done in any department, and especially not in the effects department. So I'm not sure why you expect anything right now to be representative of the final product as it totally is not since most items are placeholders or WIP or not even present yet. The "snow" you remember building up never happened, it was simply the same particle effect as smoke or the dust effect behind aircraft taking off that would be generated when the aircraft encountered the ground and then would disappear just as quickly. pilotpierre Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 I dont expect anything right now to be representative of the final product - thats why it was posted in suggestions. I have not had the original IL2 series loaded since I upgraded the PC a couple of years back so I can't check it out there. Its been all RoF from then to BoS hit the streets. My last sentence in my previous post reads "However, I grudgedly accept rose coloured glasses may be in play." I surrender, give in, yield, cede.
Flanker15 Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 On topic: I would like to see the tech that does the tire tracks be used to make a trail in the snow with oil and (2d) little bits of plane behind a crashed plane.
Wolfstriked Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Well admittedly it was a long time ago, and at 67 my memory is probably suspect but I remember the wheels up slide going for longer, with more snow dust flying around and snow being built up in front on the stopped a/c??? I was thinking the same thing lately. The planes in BoS seem to stop too fast.just a feeling I get when I watch belly landings that the friction is too high. One other thing that I wanna see is snow being blown around when you fly plane close to ground.Knowing 1C Game Studios its being worked on.
