Stupid question time: Finding the grass Runway?

Recommended Posts

Finally got everything set up, my toebrakes repaired, and (I think) everything mapped, and I'm trying out buzzing around in the plane. Woho!

One problem; I can't seem to find the runway to takeoff from? I've ended up at one of those grass field runways, and I'm having a bit of trouble finding where one is supposed to line up on for it to get into the air. At this point I've found both the AA emplacements, and the trees, and I believe I've found the hanger (without running in to it this time even!)

So how does one find the start of the green field runway?

Thank you,

Harry Voyager

There is no runways for those airfields. If you look on the map and zoom into your location you'll be able to see a red circle (I think) if it's a grass field, if it's an airfield with a runway you'll be able to see the layout of the runway on the actual map.

With grass fields just take off in whatever direction is clear and provides enough space for takeoff.

If you want a paved runway...try the northern most field on the Moscow map..

You can sometimes find lit fires at the end of the grass airfield. Take off and land between those, and there will be less chance of hitting anyone.

Hi Voyager,

The trick is zoom in map(right in), and u can see which part of field the start spawn point is.

Problem is often mplayer map designers do a poor job of directing ground planes where to go and land direction.

There are a number of ways to direct ground traffic if a map is done correctly.

Most people also land wrong way because of this too... some map designers put " T " markers at start of runway also to show direction to land and takeoff from.

Also when I was new to online play I sometimes would land wrong way because I did not know what to look for.

Thank you, this has all been very informative.

So, in general, what determines the correct way to land on a runway?

Land so that the "T" can be read as a "T".

The horizontal bar of the T indicates the threshold of your "runway".

Landing before it comes costly - mostly charged in crates of beer.

In general, you want to takeoff and land into the wind, but this is not as important if the wind is weak. However, if you see that everyone is taking off or landing in one direction, it's probably better to do the same.

Note:

  • The correct wind direction is shown by the following:
    • A windsock
    • Small fires or smoke effects (e.g., fires marking ends of the runway, chimney smoke, vehicle damage fires, coloured smoke markers)
  • The correct wind direction may be shown by the following if the mission designer points them in the correct direction:
    • Large fires and smoke effects such as a burning city, town, or village
  • Some missions give the wind direction in the briefing. Hopefully this is the correct direction, but it's possible for inexperienced designers to give a direction that the wind is blowing towards rather than blowing from. In the mission editor, designers specify the "blowing towards" direction.
  • The bombsight weather report gives the direction that the wind is blowing from but this is accessible only in the air.

Like Stix said, you zoom in and see which part of the field the spawn point is and you land from that direction, even if there is no T marked,

  • 1 year later...

So I'm now engaged in finding out by trial and error which direction has enough space.  Pick a spot, line up, accelerate, crash in to the trees, rinse and repeat.  I guess eventually I'll learn to correlate the size of the trees in the distance with the take-off run required by an IL-2.  Seems like there should be a better way to do it though...

You can check map prior landing. Zoom, zoom a lot to see airport shape under its icon.

If you are on gps server, you may see on beginning on which side you should be taking off. Without gps it is trickier, but map zoom can help also.

Edit; I had your question from yesterday open in my tab, after sending answer I can see I am pretty late :)

I even have trouble finding taxiways in non-paved runways!

Me too.

Regarding the T... i presume youre taking off in the direction of the vertical part where the 'leg' of the T points?

Yes. The "T" is also part of a "Signal Square", but we only use the T signal.
