RR_Merlin Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Laying in bed the other night, just before falling to sleep I came to think about one thing concerning Oculus Rift (strange things whirls around in your mind at night:-). How in the world are you going to see the keyboard when flying around with this amazing gadget on your head? If we had a fully functional 3D cockpit in BoS it wouldn´t be much of a problem I suppose, but I can see myself in a fiercy battle blinded by the OR groping around the desk, spilling coffee (or whisky) all over the keyboard trying to find the right keys. Ideas anyone?
DD_bongodriver Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 it's the single most asked question regarding the oculus, with the very simple solution, don't rely on the keyboard, use HOTAS, use a clickable in-screen cockpit, it's not a major brain strain to memorize the functions of a HOTAS system and finding a mouse should not present much of a problem, it's highly likely many technologies will evolve with VR to make the experience an intuitive one.
HagarTheHorrible Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Initially I think that not being able to see a cockpit will not present so much of a challenge. BoS doesn't require to many buttons, even less if you choose some automatic functions. Other commands are easily accessed with voice control, VAC being a recommendation. I think for the majority, with a little creative thinking, most issues will be easily overcome. If the OR becomes a must have leap forward, and there is no guarantee, then hardware and software developers will quickly come up with ways around not being able to see the keyboard, if however the OR becomes a novelty rather than a must have then it will really come down to perseverance and ingenuity on the part of the user and whether or not the end result is worth the effort.

I agree, the HOTAS system + mouse becomes intuitive, but do the devs plan to implement a clickable cockpit in BoS in the future? RoF hasn´t. I really hope they do. Personally I think it feels much more realistic.

They have said no, but the sim is not designed to a level of complexity that will require one either, most if not all CEM functions will probably fit on the HOTAS assignments.
Charlo-VRde Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 I have a full CH HOTAS, but I can't fly often enough to truly have all of my buttons memorized... so clipped on the sides of my monitor I have cheat sheets of my Fighterstick and Pro Throttle button maps. I also have Requiem's labeled cockpit images printed out and on my desk, and aircraft guides for referencing things such as minimum take off speed, maximum recommended coolant and oil temps, etc. I suspect many others here rely on the same. What I expect to do once I get the commercial OR is bind a button with alt-tab so I can quickly cycle through digital versions of the above. I hope that approach will work. What this may mean in general is that many who get an OR will specialize in fewer aircraft, since we can't as easily refer to cheat sheets on aircraft we don't regularly fly. I also expect much less chat activity in MP, since a keyboard would be clumsy to operate while wearing an OR. Heck, I can see some squads pitching in to buy someone an OR just to reduce that person's chat activity! Charlo
JG27_Chivas Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Many people like myself can type without having look at their keyboards. Personally I don't need a keyboard, or like to use a clickable cockpit.. I much prefer the tactile feel of my Hotas system, while using VAC, and Teamspeak for communication. "IF" the VR experience is as good as it appears to be, then people will easily find a solution to their problems. That said the OR developers are looking at ways to help them.
RR_Merlin Posted February 13, 2014 Author Posted February 13, 2014 Well, personally I´m more in for the real thing with buttons and levers you have to activate inside a clickable, 3D cockpit, much like the A2A P-51. I can´t wait to get my hands on (in) a pair of Virtual Reality gloves coupled to the OR, seeing my virtual hands working around in the cockpit:-) Or am I just dreaming? Couldn´t be so far away in the future, could it? What a challenge dogfighting while struggling with all the systems!
RR_Merlin Posted February 13, 2014 Author Posted February 13, 2014 Couldn´t resist googling a little on VR gloves, and look what Oculus is hiding in their basement... Think it´s time to re-write some code for BoS... https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=4913
RR_Merlin Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 I'm working on it... Wow! Cooool!:-) 1
Venom Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 If the OR becomes a must have leap forward, and there is no guarantee There IS guarantee. No arguing, just believe me! And let's talk about in 15 months! If Oculus Rift would go public, I'd sell everything I have up to my very last shirt and put all the money in their shares...
