Feathered_IV Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 A word to the wise. The excellent Men of War, Assualt Squad 2 is on sale via steam for the next 24 hours or so. Just a bit over five bucks.
FlatSpinMan Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Men of War. Is that the Russian Front battlefield management game? 3rd person view, commanding squads plus arty/tank support?
Feathered_IV Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Thats the one. I'm downloading #2 now. I played the hell out of the earlier titles. I always liked how each soldier had a name, his own pockets and could be controlled or directed independently. It was always very satisfying to have three guys with mines lure a Tiger away and take out one of its tracks. Then crouch in the lee of its hull and take out the crew as they emerged to repair it. With the right equipment you could get it going again and use it against the enemy. Very GTA. The latest update for AS2 apparently has new things like individual skills for tankers, troops and artillery etc. which sounds really good. Before that it was one soldier can do everything. Hopefully the third-party dgen works with this new version too. As that was one of the most enjoyable mods.
VRPilot Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 I just tried War Thunder ground forces again. and, yes, they did improve it a lot! Much fun in SB tanks, could not win in my IS2 the whole day but enjoyed it a lot!
MiG21bisFishbedL Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Valkyria Chronicles. It's a weeabooo Band of Brothers without the graphic depictions of war/All's Quiet on The Western Front without the depressing reality and emotional numbing of war. Either way, it's pretty good. 1
Nil Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 (edited) Started with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R steam bundle recently.. really fun, my old computer couldn't handle it fully when it were released. MX vs ATV Reflex is fun, MotoGP14 grew on me when I cheated to unlock! all bikes. (Dangerous waters with the RA mod... I guess it's really heavily in simulator, but I really love it!)My name is Pigmachine everywhere, if you for some reason want to add me in a game (I'm not that good with social-skills atm) youtube, Or want to discuss Swedish politics or find me any other place Edited November 12, 2014 by Pigmachine
Matt Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Bought "This war of mine" yesterday and enjoy it a lot. One of the few games that i bought this year which i consider worth the money (just 18,99 €). Pretty cool survival game with a different approach (no zombies!). At day you improve your shelter, make food and stuff and at night you scavange the neighbourhood. I like the overall style and gameplay alot and at least for now (only played it for three hours), there are plenty of surprises. And it also seems to have a good replay value. It's one of those "just one more *" games though, so it's sort of a time killer.
Feathered_IV Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I've been eyeing This War of Mine over at the gog.com sales. I picked up Nexus Jupiter Incident, which is proving to be an enjoyable $2.85. I've got an incoming free version of Witcher2 as well. Don't know if that one is necessarily for me, but enough of the mainstream gamers rave about it that it will be an interesting window into popular tastes.
unreasonable Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I liked Witcher 1 so much, a fresh and funny original take on RPGs where you could go gambling, drinking and whoring in between the usual monster hunting. The developers then sold out to the PC reviewers and console crowd to make a dull, generic twitch combat game. I got about 1/4 of the way into it and gave up in disgust. Witcher 3 is supposed to be coming soon, but I am not going to buy it unless I think it has some character.
=LD=Hethwill Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 http://steamcommunity.com/id/hethwill/recommended/234650 Shadowrun Returns is a example of a well designed role playing PC game. It has one of the most functional and crystal clear interfaces i have seen in a while with the notable aspect of having the story all across your face in such a clear type, size and colouring that you you won't just read the text you will really read the story and every single bit of information while trying to solve the plot even before you move your characters. The "board" is isometric perfection and even the absence of any rotational 3D camera does not interfere with the flow of the game. You never get lost, the cursor works everytime and your actions are well performed as you wish. I must confide that I never ever played PnP Shadowrun but was an avid Cyberpunk freak so at first I was a bit suspicious of all this mixture of fantasy hi tech mumbo jumbo pot but it came out good. I gave a quick look through the PnP rulebooks and the PC adaptation seems quite solid and credible, but a long time fan can obviously point these aspects better. The combat is pleasing and fluid. All options are there without delay and without complication. Straight action moves, combat and skills or reserve in overwatch. The design has no need for extra "crouch, lie down, roll" sillyness as the characters adopt their stances as needed and as cover positions allow them. And yes, combat sequences are demanding and seldom boring. Once you get to know your runners you will get more at easy with your team. It is like a mini game when you hire runners for a mission. Sometimes you try a different combination and everything goes awry. You step back and remake the "natural" team and everything goes smooth... And the beauty is that every player will have a different team, no winning formulas. Onwards. The story is compeling. Truly draws you win. A mixture of Blade Runner, Neuromancer, Gabriel Knight and Alien Trilogy all in a big pot. Yep. No idea what will happen when you open the pot but the sequence of events keeps you on your fringe of imagination and really keeps you playing just for the sake of knowing what is beyond the next run. This is one of the coolest games I have played in a while and I will simply keep playing it straight until I go deep and find the truth. You won't regret not buying it BUT you will enjoy it immensely if you do. 8.5/10
HippyDruid Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Lately I have rediscovered Command and Conquer (C&C) Generals, Zero Hour. After all these years I think it still holds it own against the other RTS offerings out there. You can usually pick the up the complete C&C collection pretty cheap on Origin.
Emgy Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 (edited) Watched the video play through of the tutorial - very interesting treatment of a generally neglected time period. Lots of nice touches, though the overall style and format of the game aren't really my cup of tea. Can't really see dropping the $40 on this at this point from a pure play/fun perspective (though might be worth it just to support their efforts to develop something in this time period), but certainly might consider picking this up later on a Steam sale or something. Matrix games are usually a bit overpriced. :/ I got it on the release sale, the price was fine then. Anyway what I really like is how this game embraces this: "No battle plan ever survives contact with the enemy." Routed units get pursued by the unit who caused the routing, and you can't give them commands. Sometimes they charge other enemy units in their path. It makes the battlefield chaotic and the end game can be very interesting since the original battle lines get all mixed up. But they really should have made a non-PBEM multiplayer mode. With how the game handles combat phase, PBEM makes a MP game take twice as long as it should. Edited December 4, 2014 by Calvamos
=LD=Hethwill Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 But they really should have made a non-PBEM multiplayer mode. With how the game handles combat phase, PBEM makes a MP game take twice as long as it should. Definitely. I don't see them as overpriced. They produce a lot of titles covering all eras. Not every customer will be interested in ALL eras, but usually a couple, so they are highly specialized with their products and prices to cover all the product work flow. Qvadriga is a example of a overpriced one. Game is fun but in no way worth the price they asking for.
avlSteve Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 (edited) I enjoy some grand strategy games, gary grigsby and crusader kings II, Europa universals, Civ 5 or 4 and what not. Every now and then I'll get into a FPS, but the sessions don't grab me for a month at a time like them othern's. Edited December 5, 2014 by avlSteve
FlatSpinMan Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Interesting to read about Shadow run. A guy at work recommended it and having read your account it sounds pretty interesting, especially the books and movies you mentioned. Also, I'd never heard of Matrix games but that game they have wherein you can replay the entire western front of WW2 would be amazing. Looks like it'd take some learning though.
=LD=Hethwill Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Yep. Finished the S:R yesterday. Going for S: Dragonfall next. The GG War in the West seems gigantic. Was watching the Slitherine stream on the release and it has everything available. My only worry is that it has too much, too many options and no way to limit it at some point and delegate operational levels I don't want to take care of to the AI. But i've yet to see it through and with a hardcover manual of 300+ pages... it is indeed the new jewel of pc diecut wargaming.
Emgy Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Speaking of Slitherine, their Panzer General/Corps + WH40K mashup is pretty good if you like that kind of hex wargames. The scenario design is very thematic and different from Panzer Corps so it doesn't feel just like a reskin, which is what I feared. The briefing screens have hand-drawn character art and voiceovers, pretty well done. Lots of unit types and it's fun to tinker with your battallion.

The cool thing about his latest is that it's about as intuitive as it gets. You really can pretty much just start up a campaign and learn as you go. And it's all about rebuilding and maintaining (or disrupting, depending) the rail lines. It does take a lifetime to complete a game, I guess. Edited December 6, 2014 by avlSteve
SOLIDKREATE Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 I just got Wolfenstien:The New Order. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED. NO MULTI-PLAYER at all!.
FlatSpinMan Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Didn't you read the box? I don't play it, but I imagine it would be mentioned somewhere.
johncage Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 facepalm... people don't do research on a game before purchasing?

No box it was digital facepalm... people don't do research on a game before purchasing? :facepalm......since the last three had multi-player why was there a reason for me to doubt?
Yakdriver Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Anno 1404 for peaceful building Minecraft for tall ship building, and building towns GTA IV finished, wish there was more. Dungeon siege 2; broken world just for old times sake Potc- City of abandoned ships+GoF for tall ship action 1946... just reinstalling the TFM mods.
SOLIDKREATE Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 I wish they would make a modern day Civil War FPSMMO along the line of GTA V.
39bn_pavig Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 If anyone is interested in civ-like 4x games it is worth checking out endless legend and endless space. Endless space is a classic 4x in space with the usual trappings. Legend is set in the same universe, but like civ with rpg elements. Tactical combat is quite innovative in both - simple but very cool. Dungeon of endless is a rogue like tower defence hybrid that also fits in there somewhere. They are all very slickly designed, somewhat odd indie takes on classic formulas. Well worth a look. 1

SOLIDKREATE Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 Just got Farcry 4 and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare for PC.
Feathered_IV Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 I just began playing This War of Mine. Doesn't exactly fill you with Christmas cheer, but it's a very thought provoking achievement from a small indie company. I'm still grieving for Bruno, who found a handgun in the basement of an abandoned house. It accidentally discharged, and in a tragic ten seconds there was the clatter of feet from upstairs and the shouts of bandits. Bruno was gunned down without hope is escape. Food is scarce, and the othe two survivors in my group are depressed over Brunos loss. Silav took it particularly hard. He left in the night and has not returned. Katia is too weak from hunger to forage, and last night bandits broke in and took the remaining food and supplies. She was injured and needs medical care. I don't think this will end well... 1
sturmkraehe Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 I've just finished the puzzle game "The Talos Principle" and I cannot recommend it enough. It is a smart piece of art and provides you with food for new thoughts. Beautiful setting and music put you in the right mood. The puzzles range from easy to very challenging but are always feasible within a couple of minutes. I only once went for a hint on the internet. The more you progress through the game the more you learn about the background of the story which adds a lot to the whole experience. I have not discovered one flaw apart from occasional slowdowns in the performance.
Sokol1 Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 Far Cry 4 - Deja vu, boring repetitive missons, XP and power up's... But nice world, animals, weapons and "pow pow" = funny.
FlatSpinMan Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I've just jumped back into "Dishonoured". I'd gotten most of the way through it - reviews said it'd take about 10 hours or something but I never finish a game in that amount of time, so I'm currently over 30hrs in - and it is fun to come back to after a break. It had been getting a bit samey but after a month of more away I'm enjoying teleporting and rat-possessing and tranquilizing my way through what really is a cool town. Very much reminds me of that town of China Mieville's creation, New Corbuzon? or something. Anyway, it makes a nice change from clipping trees and exploding in a snowy wasteland.
Guest deleted@30725 Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Forgotten Hope 2 ww2 mod for battlefield 2 - no time for it though.
361fundahl Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Spin Tires Battlefield 4 Open RA (open source, free Red Alert clone/game engine) Rarely i might play portal 2, age of empire HD, Chivalry, and a few others depending on my mood but it boils down to those first three games. I'm eventually going to get Universe Simulator 2 (maybe wait till 3 lol) I have the first one. Sand game is fun but I need a more in depth one
