What non-simulator games do you play?

S!

I like Alien a LOT! This is how games should be done, everything just works and the game play is smooth and rock solid. And the atmosphere..it is intense. I bet the Alien does not show itself just yet, but when I get a bit farther into the Sevastopol station. Already scared to look around the corner :o:

+1 For Legend of Grimrock as well. Shows how well thought out game design is more important than gimmicks. (1CGS team should give it a try).

Must go and get the second chapter!

Ha! I'd completely forgotten about that...

Do you sign an NDA for the Kingdom Come alpha? Or can you talk about it freely?

What's so good about that Gimrock thing? I've heard a lot of people talking about it, but from a cursory look, I'm wondering what it has got.

I'm playing the socks off (for want of more sweary alternative) of X:Com Enemy Unknown. It's such fun, especially the ability to customise your troops. And it was free!

Grimrock series is one of the few games where they take an old formula that worked great back in the day and make a new "retro" game which is fun in a good old way rather than appealing purely to nostalgia. The thing people like about it is that within the constraints of the old dungeon crawler genre they managed to figure out what's fun about such games and produce exactly that. Also because of the blocky nature of movement etc, it plays quite like a turn/tile based game, so is a bit different to everything else out there.

Freely. It is a technical alpha mind you.

Grimrock has:

1) Unlocks - doors with keys that need to be found, revealing useful goodies

2) A simple but challenging combat system with a variety of amusing monsters

3) A storyline and RP character development that ties the fights and exploration onto a whole, without excessive pretentious baggage.

4) No bugs or CTDs.

Technical Alpha for Kingdom Come Deliverance is rolling and... well... did a fast run as happy as any boy can be when receiving a new toy.

Looks credible, found some "witchcraft" and talked with some good country folk. Overall it has a great feeling.

Mostly I did nothing at all, but worth a first look. Enjoy.

Indeed, though I found I preferred Medieval II, although undoubtedly Rome was the high point.

The series has really gone to hell since then. :/

I think M2 is probably the best value of them all. That with the Kingdoms expansion is a lot of game and a lot of nice variety.

Aaannnd I'm reaching for my boxed set of it to reinstall. I AM A CREATURE OF HABIT.

Just before my mind was wandering, and for some reason it dug up the Crusades and the Teutonic Knights. For an instant I thought, "Ooh. Why don't I play TW?" but luckily I resisted the urge and the moment passed.

Recovering from TW addiction is a one-day-at-a-time process.

I loved some early TW, Rome, Medieval II (great Middle Earth mod), both Shoguns: but Rome II's 45 second battles cured me.

Wow - three pages and (unless I overlooked something) no one seems to have mentioned either of my two current favorite non-sim games:

IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad

Rocket Jockey

Maybe if they get it working and I can get past the unlock nonsense and they create a real career mode and/or release a mission editor so somebody else can create a meaningful, historically immersive SP experience then I could consider BoS a real sim game - until then it just seems too arcadey to qualify as what I consider a sim.  Which isn't to say that it can't be good or fun (I enjoyed my brief foray into BoS MP last week) or appeal to a lot of players (I realize I'm not representative of their target market), but just as a matter of personal taste and philosophy I can't really call BoS a sim at this point.

But, back to the spirit of the topic - I dusted off Rocket Jockey a while back and got it running again, and while it could certainly use a graphics refresh it's still one of quirkiest but most enjoyable games ever (and with one of the best soundtracks of all times).  When I read the posts here about folks complaining about some rubber-banding issues with certain planes' rudder controls, it reminded me of Rocket Jockey and I had to dig it back out.  Now that's fun

Newest acquisition on the wargame side of me. Spending a good time so far. Obviously being a specialist game is not really a cheapstick but the crowd intended likes to support development, pretty much like simmers.

Watched the video play through of the tutorial - very interesting treatment of a generally neglected time period.  Lots of nice touches, though the overall style and format of the game aren't really my cup of tea.  Can't really see dropping the $40 on this at this point from a pure play/fun perspective (though might be worth it just to support their efforts to develop something in this time period), but certainly might consider picking this up later on a Steam sale or something.

Hey, coincidence, I bought that about a week ago. So far the AI is kicking my arse.

It is a very traditional hex based turn style wargame, but nicely done, with emphasis on routing the enemy army rather than Total War style blood baths. Campaigns are a series of battles, not a separate level of play.

Strong recommendation for anyone with a long term wargame background, probably not for those who must have RTS or Total War style graphics and action.

From a few of the bits I saw of it, it looks very similar to a tabletop wargame called Field of Glory...

Yes. You seem correct.

Apparently the engine used here is the same as for Battle Academy.

Must say that the last tutorials, against Swedish pike squares is hard, really hard even in normal. Their impact is outwordly so had to go through a few tries to watch their weaknesses at work.

The factions, although fighting all in a similar way, all have their unique ways.

TBH is worth the buy even if you wait for a budget sale. And as you say, support of developers is worth. To me wargames and sims live forever in my hard drives. Plus this Slitherine titles keep running on my "non gaming" work laptops so it is great for down time or travel boredom.

And thanks for watching. Will go through the Thirty Years War next... *gulp*

I am thinking of spending some money already on the so called technical alpha of Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Release is planned somewhere in 2015.

Those graphics look awesome.

And I've never seen such a beautifully rendered forest. :)

So do they include a cut scene of Ned Beatty squealing like a pig?  Seeing that once was enough for me - I'll probably pass on this one :)

If you want this kind of thing in a video game you can always play Skyrim with mods!
