What non-simulator games do you play?

Recommended Posts

I'm a big fan of the Halo series of first-person shooters (though one Halo game was an RTS... that was the first one I really played), Empire Earth, a great RTS spanning the prehistoric age to the space age, Slender: The Eight Pages, Slender: The Arrival, Haunt, and Haunted Memories, all great games based on the Slender Man mythos (in fact, I'm making a Slender Man webseries!). I I'm also really enjoying Batman: Arkham Origins, which is a great open-world game.

I also play a bit of Team Fortress 2, and The Ship, which are both really good games (and I think they use the same engine), but they don't have as deep a place in my heart as the games above.

There's a crapload more of non-sim games that I have, like Crysis 2, Medal of Honor, Cry of Fear, and some of the Transformers games, but if I listed them all I'd probably overload the server :(

I'm not putting War Thunder and Silent Hunter Online on that list though, because at least they try. And War Thunder's 'Simulator Mode' is pretty good for someone like me who only plays simulators on 70-90% realism (please don't crucify me).

atm, a ArmA 3 and Red Orchestra 2. While the tank battle sucks compared to RO1, I like the infantry combat!

I'd love to try out Red Orchestra 2 sometime. It looks pretty good. It would be interesting to compare RO2's Stalingrad with BoS's.

Hardly any due to time constraints but apart from World of Tanks I sometimes dip into 4X games such as Endless Space or Stardrive, RPGs like Dragon Age: Origins or The Witcher, Strategy games like Empire: Total War and one day I'll surely also continue my XCOM: Enemy Unknown game. Funnily enough I recently went back to play some rather old games like Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic or X: Beyond the Frontier.

Planetside 2 (not played much, nice to switch to when BF4 isn't going well)

I've been thinking about getting that one. It looks pretty awesome, and persistent warfare would be an interesting change from what I'm used to in multiplayer.

Planetside 2 was great for a while but having to load a 1-2 GB patch every time I wanted to play for an hour or so, killed the fun for me.

Maybe it's gotten better now and since it's free to play you can go and check it out.

Ouch!

But please take my opinion on this with a grain of salt. I played when it was fresh out and there were lots of patches and it was a huge grind for updates, unless you wanted to spend money on it.

Last time I played (almost a year ago?) there were fewer updates and daily bonus points so there was improvement and I have no idea how it is today.

Now enough off topic from me...

I actually consider it a plus that the developers are so active in balancing the game as well as fixing bugs.

That's one of the things that I like about War Thunder. Of course, the most affect from them that a Simulator a battles player like me will feel will be new aircraft. But I am looking forward to the tanks and warships...

But I've established that I think of War Thunder as a simulator (not as good as BoS, but awesome MP), so enough off-topic stuff. I think I'll get Planetside 2 tommorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like :)

Just so everyone knows, I only think of it as a simulator in Simulator Mode, so you can put your pitchforks down :P

Too many to count. Over the years I have really enjoyed:

Total War series (the total concersions of Medieval 2 in particular)

Assassins Creed series

Mount and Blade

Red Orchestra 2

Elder Scrolls series

Fallout series

Psychonauts (the only platformer game everyone has to play)

Portal series (the first one is propably the best designed game ever, and one of the funniest)

Half Life series

World of Warcraft (I quit the day it became a chore, but I had loads of fun until then)

Mafia series

Braid (a little gem with an absolutely fantastic ending)

Right now,

Got back into Skyrim after adding ten thousand mods to make it look like a 2014 game.

Arma 3 coop.

Space Engineers (spaceship minecraft).

But mainly trying to finish off a bunch of TV series... parks & rec, 30 rock, battlestar galactica (!!), breaking bad (!!!) etc.

I've 258 games on my Steam account: many of these are never been installed.

I like challenging games, but sometimes I really have to relax and I can find myself playing Candy Crush...

Anyway I love more Quality (good stories) than Quantity.

In these months I'm in:

- Crusader Kings 2 (I love that age and the "Dynasty" matter: Europa Universalis 4 instead is too much in the "Nation" one)

- Mechwarrior Online

- Kerbal

- "The Walking Dead" and "The Wolf Among Us" by Telltale games (I'm awaiting for the GoT series).

- Wargame Airland Battles

I also reinstalled Skyrim with the best Mods... but still I find it really boring.

If imagine the patches would have been more frequent when the game was younger.

I've had a few patches in the few weeks I've been playing but these only take about 10 minutes to download and install.

I actually consider it a plus that the developers are so active in balancing the game as well as fixing bugs.

I agree.

It's only really a problem for people with horrendously slow download speeds - like me.

I've gotten back into strategy board games (I.e. table top games). I used to play a lot of hex and counter games when I was a teenager. Ironically, although I still like those kind of strategic (or tactical) and somewhat complex games, the ones I'm into now do not use hexes on their maps. A couple even don't have maps at all!

My current favs that challenge my flight sim time: Guns of Gettysburg, Up Front, Twilight Struggle, Pax Porfiriana.

So are you both using Vassal?

I use Vassal.  I haven't played others much with it yet, but I had a fantastic email game of Guns of Gettysburg using Vassal a few months ago.  Generally, play by email works best for me during the week.  I get face-to-face opportunities at a local gaming store that is just down the street from my house.  I usually spend a Saturday once a month there.  Other games I've learned & played there:  A Few Acres of Snow, Storm Over Stalingrad, Cuba Libre and Eclipse.  I learned Twilight Struggle there too and ended up buying it.  Great game.

Nope, ASL as a specific third-party p2p(real time)/pbem interface which is very efficient and easy ot use: VASL.

Posted (edited)

I have played some in my past:

- Dragon Age Origin and Dragon Age 2 (didn't like it)

- Skyrim quite a lot

- a few ego shooters until this genre bored the crap out of me. Far Cry 3 however was quite good but only for one play through.

My recurring love affair is with Mass Effect 1-3. My all time favorite of the non flight sim games.

Ah of course! I even installed it to follow a ASL SK1 tutorial found on the web: I've actually enjoyed it.  :salute:

- Dragon Age Origin and Dragon Age 2 (didn't like it)

That one lasted 20 minutes on my HD... loved Origin (I hope one day they're going to develop a sequel) but the latter was a total different game.

At the moment:

1. Insurgency (i like it very very much....bye bye BF, CS and COD)

2. Red Orchestra (since first open beta)

I saw PewDiePie play The Walking Dead. It looks like a really, REALLY good game!

Yep. But it's not really a "game", as you only have to watch at cutscenes and sometimes to press the mouse key.

It's more a interactive movie. :-)

I've recently played Ico and Shadow of The Colossus (emulated, and what a beauty they are at 6x native resolution...).

They left me with the feeling that almost every other game that came out more recently just hasn't achieved anything special at all.

TW: Shogun 2 can still provide some quality experiences for me though. Also trying to get into Dishonored...

There's no general game news thread, so...

Arma 3 is introducing easy-to-use RPG-style gamemaster tools.

(free dlc)

There is already a community-made GM toolset, but it's complex to learn and use, a bit like RoF mission designer vs IL2. On the other hand, its complexity gives the GM a large amount of possibilities, time will tell if the Zeus mode can match that.

Some RO2 players here!  I've dabbled a bit, but my all-time fave (nearly 1000hrs) is the RO1 mod "Darkest Hour".  It shifts the action from the Eastern to the Western Front and has a ton of improvements over the original (particularly with tanking).  It's a bit long in the tooth and under-populated now, but I'd recommend it to anyone who likes "serious" WW2 shooters.

Cybermat, I'd recommend PS2.  The scope of the battles is awesome, and you can find yourself in epic battles featuring hundreds of people on foot, in tanks and in aircraft.  Sometimes it can be a bit one-sided, but the beauty of it is that you can re-locate to find another battle.   Also, because it's sci-fi, it can get away with a lot of gamey things that you shouldn't find in a "realistic" shooter, but which make the whole thing very tactical (eg mobile spawns, resurrectionist medics, teleporting, and so on).  Finally,  I'm not desperate to level up, or spend any time "farming" points, but I've found I could earn enough "certs" to get enough gear to enjoy the experience without having to spend much money (£10 for 260 hours play so far).

Someone else mentioned Combat Mission : that series is one of my all time favourites.

Insurgency Launch Review

Quote: "On the Internet I read many things about Insurgency, that it was on par with counter strike or that it plays exactly like it. I don't think this captures the full picture though. The game stands a head above most current gen shooters available. The unique way guns operate, and the methodical yet nail biting intensity of standoff gun fights feels like nothing else I've played. Insurgency is definitely one of a kind, and that's coming from someone who has spent half his life testing this genre."

Conclusion: Excellent

OMG, apparently Halo 2 Anniversary is being made :D

Never tried Halo. 1c's RTS Men of War series is the one that I've been hooked on for several years now. Some of the voice acting is so bad it's almost spastic, but the action is real and the fiendish joy of taking over the enemy's equipment and pressing it into service never gets old.

Stalker Call of Pripyat with the misery 2.1Beta installed.

There is no game even coming close to this.

Planetside 2? Bah humbug... I played it for a few hours and it was terrible... the air combat in particular was a bit of a joke to me. Not my cup of tea. Personally I'd take WWII Online Battleground Europe anyday, archaic graphics, but there's nothing comparable.  :)
