Wolf8312 Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Anyone tried this? Probably one of the best VR games out there (although I loyally nominated BOX for my VR game of the year), but certainly the best VR car racing game I have tried. It's these experiences along with the flightsims that assure me that VR will never die. Goes without saying you need a wheel set up, and I did have to pay extra for the simshaker wheels (jetseat) software, but compared to the first PC, it has much better VR support, the graphics are far better with much less distracting shimmer (really much less), and although I have a good system I never noticed any performance issues either with motion smoothing or default AReprojection. The 1080Ti was pricey but for VR it certainly has proved worth it. Also steam VR has really improved this last year. As importantly though, the cars themselves handle alot better, with much better physics this time around. The 1st PC was as if the cars themselves were on ice, but that problem is absent here! So I highly recommend! The game is on sale right now, and with the price it is currently at, you can't really go wrong, as it's about a third of the normal price. Only problem is I really suck at car racing as it requires prolonged concentration something of which I 1
dburne Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 I have been meaning to pick this up, is it still Steam only?

You can get it on green man gaming, though thats probably yet one more thing on top of another, as you have to install the eco system. If you have steam already for Il-2 though you might as well! Funny cause I love steam but would never have oculus/facebook on my computer (even for revive) and yet you are the opposite, cant stand steam, but like occulus!
kestrel79 Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 How does PC2 compare to iRacing in VR? Good to see a fellow flight simmer who also sim races

Good to see a fellow flight simmer who also sim races I was wondering myself. Can't bring myself to get Iracing because of the subscription. I think where IR shines though is online play, from what I have heard (and of course purists and maybe fan boy's will disagree) the actual experience is not much better if at all. I think IRacing beats PC2 in the sense that it is more serious online, with a more mature and proffesional player base who will the rules. But I am not sure if it's any better. I could compare PC2 with Assetto Corsa for you, if it's any help, and say in VR at least I prefer PC2. It looks better, and is less of a pain in the ass to set up (AC always need to put on and take off HMD). I like Asseto Corsa physics, but I'm not sure theres alot in it, anymore really although again I'm sure others will vehemently disagree (as with BOX and DCS!).

Iracing is hands down the best online sim racer. No question about it, no other game allows you to get into public races with such well behaved people. The game PUNISHES you severely for stepping out of line. You must race and work your way up to faster cars. You can't even touch the fast cars till you've gotten your A license. It's really the best system there is when it comes to public racing. PC2 is a joke online unless you join a league, same with the others. Although I implore you to check out http://www.simracingsystem.com/ if you want serious online racing from any of the other sims, it provides the best non league racing you can get outside of iracing.
Wolf8312 Posted November 29, 2018 Author Posted November 29, 2018 (edited) Lol! After all that not even sure I will go back to PC2 now as I have just tried Rfactor 2 in VR, and it really does blow PC2 out of the water in my opinion. It feels so much faster (I love F1 the most in driving sims), and the physics and car handling seems so much better that I think it's seduced me away from PC2 for good. Graphics as well were a big thing that put me off about R factor, but I have to say simple graphics seem to work in a VR games favour. Its one of those games that actually looks better in VR than on the monitor, just as all those crappy tech demos tend to. I have to say cranked up it looks fine, and in a weird way more realistic than PC2, with less shimmer for one thing, but also things like the crowds and audience in the stands look better. They may just be blobs and dots in RF2, but at least this way, all you see is them blur past you, whereas in PC2, all you can see is some very obvious cardboard cut out people. Because of lower graphics demands as well, you really couldn't hope for a better VR experience in terms of performance. Not to say there is anything wrong with PC2's perfromance, but with RF2 and its insane sense of speed, performance seems as good as it gets (although I am rocking quite a powerful PC). The developers have basically focused on the cars themselves, with graphics and bling obviously of low priority, but this is the best thing one could hope for as a VR user, and I stress again in VR (crank up MSSA though) it really does not look bad at all! So hope no-one took my advice! Rfactor2 is the one you want, although now like me you've probably missed the sale. Worth full price anyhow! Edited November 30, 2018 by Wolf8312
dburne Posted November 29, 2018 Posted November 29, 2018 (edited) I really need to stay out of this section of the forum. I was so addicted to racing, mainly online racing back in the late 90's. Spent hour upon hour of practicing and racing each week. I have been tempted to get back into it if only offline, but so far have successfully stayed away. And especially after getting VR. Maybe after I get the rest of the components purchased for my new PC build and the dust has settled. Would have to get a wheel and pedal setup also, as the original red Logitech Momo set I had apparently managed to dissappear after our last move to our retirement haven... Oh yeah defo you gotta get into it Dburne a waste of that lovely set up if not! An F1 race is a hell of a thing in VR! I recommend the G25, theres probably better ones out there now (so check reviews), but it's a quality wheel and for a reasonable price you wont go wrong with it. Good FFB. Don't really like to use the gear stick though as I find that its too small, and fiddly, but the peddals are also great quality. It feels like a real wheel and pedal setup basically, except for the stick, but you can cycle through the gears with metal pedals (if that's the right word) that are attached to the wheel itself. Wheel set up is a must really, but also think you should consider getting the updated model of the jetseat. Might not seem like much, but in VR it takes the immersion factor through the roof, and probably the single biggest reason I prefer DCS. Getting into racing sims as well would probably make it more worthwhile than just DCS on its own and BOX in sound mode. Of course with racing you also have to buy the sim shaker wheels software so yup more things that you need to buy. I'm doing it again basically lol! Can't wait to get some more time on R factor 2 tonight. Don't get me wrong, the other sims are all well and good, but this one I really love the feel of. It's actually easier than other sims like PC2 and Assetto Corsa meaning you don't slip off the road quite as easily and to me that feels more realistic. Brilliant FFB as well, but mainly for me it's the sense of speed. Another thing I know you will like is that Rfactor 2 is supposed to have comparatively good AI (although online side of things is said to be poor). Suits me as well, esepcially for the moment as I am just getting back into racing sims, and dont feel much like its worth going up against real pros at the moment!
