Emgy Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 (edited) Yep very good movie re the first article, I though this point is wrong on the part of the writer Anything dealing with, say, the subtle trials and hardships of everyday life in the American Midwest is going to be totally lost on someone from the other side of the planet. But there is one thing that everyone in the world can understand and sympathize with, no matter what their culture or ethnicity: The need to run away if you are being chased by giant robots. Likewise, foreign audiences also aren't as picky about good writing (a lot of it will be lost in the translation to subtitles anyway) or clever comedy (which is highly culturally specific). So if you're a studio executive who is choosing between financing a poignant coming of age film about an orphan ranch hand in East Texas or a film about a giant radioactive thunderstorm that gives people superpowers, chances are you're not going to go with the poignancy. Just wrong. Otherwise, no complaints ;-) Edited February 17, 2014 by Calvamos
Cybermat47 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 (edited) Man, whatever happened to that Halo movie Peter Jackson was going to make? That's still a sore point for me I guess we'll just have to stick to that other saga about heroes defying the odds to destroy an all powerful ring that Peter Jackson made. II./JG27_Rich Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) Looks like a good movie. However it is very difficult for a non-native speaker to understand the accent (where is it from? Northern England? Scottish?). Some of the independent movies are real gems ... Like "Last Tango in Halifax" Instead of "On the Pole" you'd say "Ont pole" something like that. Bradford I guess http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyXvntuybh8 Edited February 18, 2014 by II./JG27_Rich

Mastermariner Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I’m from Sweden where most of the population are fluid, more or less, in English, partly because we subtitled all foreign movies from the start. Now I live in SE Asia and can see the horrific result of dubbing! What is the point of trying to get a artistic and realistic response from an actor in original language that will end up in a , not even close to lip-synch, linguistic mishmash ? Master

Mastermariner Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 To add to the misery there are, to the best of my knowledge, only two (2) persons doing the voices in Thai. One female and one male! Years ago I heard of a company travelling in the north on a truck with a projector and a screen but without the sound. They used to hire some local people to talk into a microphone and make up what they thought was fun and appropriate. One of their best shows was a John Wayne move (Rio Bravo?) where John was to be the renowned homosexual mayor of the town. The audience where crawling on the ground dying from laughter. Master
II./JG27_Rich Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) Also if you watch enough French, German, Swedish, Danish films etc with subtitles you may start to pick up more and more as far as understanding what people are actually saying. I think it pays to take a look what's actually out there besides N American films To add to the misery there are, to the best of my knowledge, only two (2) persons doing the voices in Thai. II./JG27_Rich Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 Bradford is right around Halifax now I see..I think it would be a Yorkshire accent those boys are speaking with. https://maps.google.ca/maps?ie=UTF-8&q=bradford+united+kingdom&fb=1&gl=ca&hq=bradford+england&cid=16427475724422542984&ei=jDMDU5_9G4aBogSE_4FQ&ved=0CKMBEPwS

II./JG27_Rich Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) Beautiful film, well acted. Not enough giant robots though. I guess it's partly based on Oscar Wilde's fairy tale "The Selfish Giant" How she got those boys to do what they did in that film I'll never know. Both of them were non actors. She just auditioned in the area at the schools. That Arbor looks like he's 40 not 13 Edited February 18, 2014 by II./JG27_Rich
unreasonable Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I remember taking my Thai gf to see the movie "Troy". She loved it of course, since it is about men fighting over a beautiful woman and that is pretty much all you need to understand. Afterwards I mentioned that in many interpretations of the original story Akhilleus and Patroklos were said to be homosexual lovers, hence Akhilleus' anger. She thought about it for a while and then said "It's good that they changed that".
Finkeren Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Funny, that was the main thing that pissed me off about the movie, that and Agamemnon dying. Completely pisses all over the story and makes Achilleus' motivation so much harder to understand. I actually liked the rest of the movie, it was a decent Wolfgang Petersen flick.

Finkeren Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 The only Wolfang Petersen film I need is Das Boot That is his main contribution to cinema. Still my childhood wouldn't have been complete without "The Neverending Story" and "Outbreak" was also more than half decent.
II./JG27_Rich Posted February 19, 2014 Author Posted February 19, 2014 (edited) Peter Bogdanovich gives an intesting talk about the power of the "Closeup" in film making with one of my favorite classic comedies. Edited February 19, 2014 by II./JG27_Rich
