Game launcher works fine, cannot start a game SOLVED

Hi folks

I have searched the www and forum for answers and not seen anything so please forgive me if this is a common issue. Moderators - please do the necessary merge redirect etc if needed.

I have the game running fine on two desk top PCs. I have bought a brand new lap top and I have a failure. The laptop is virtually virgin by the way, GTX1060, pretty top endish, no potato, and less than two weeks old. NB I have seen threads re nVidia video cards; yes this is an nVidia card in case you weren't sure.

Process:

  1. game launcher opens fine
  2. log in works fine
  3. mission/quick flight menus work fine
  4. I can choose plane, map etc fine
  5. I press START and I get the countdown wheel bottom right for a second then game crashes to desk top

Things tried so far:

  • I am on DirectX 12 fully updated
  • I have tried with GeForce Experience uninstalled
  • I have run the game as Administrator
  • I have the game running on the nVidia graphics not the integrated graphics
  • I do not have my account open on another PC
  • I have unchecked "seed when downloaded"
  • I have unchecked "prefer web distribution"
  • I have checked "run fullscreen"

If anyone can offer some clues or point me at a relevant thread I would be a very happy man ?

Where is your game folder? If in C:\\program files move it out of there to any other location. Next start the game from th IL2.exe file directly found in .. Steam\Steam apps\common\IL2Sturmovik Attle of Stalingrad\bin\game, not via the launcher.

Hi FlyingH

I don't run the game via Steam but....

I have tried launching the game direct from IL2.exe in my main C drive, also moved it to a D drive, same result, same symptoms.

Just doing a fresh install to see if anything has changed.

Thank you for helping ?

Addition.......

I have just tried to play a game on my main PC and guess what..... same problem now happens on my desktop PC. It was playing fine yesterday, so goodness knows what is going on!!!!!! Not very happy as I wanted to fly my new Camel ?

I have put a ticket in with support - there is something here that indicates a problem at their end, not  mine....

Sorry but if that is the case, how can I and most others run the game just fine?

Did you do your fresh install as you indicated?.If so, did you completely delete everything before re-installing?

I hope you got things working as they should. :salute:

I do agree Thad, I think the lack of similar problems reported is good, in the sense that if the game is 99.9% ok for the user base, this has to be a good thing.

But for me on a) a brand new lap top and b) on a desktop PC that ran the game fine yesterday, to have the game repeating the same crash is perplexing. Hence - if I have changed nothing here, why does the game now crash?

Anyway - I will reinstall after a complete delete of all game files, and see if I get a change. I'll speak to the support unit via my ticket and see how we get on. At least I know now that this is NOT a common problem!

I hope it get them working too! I hope it gets things working too! S!

Ok looks like I have found a solution... but I am not sure why it works.

Previously my IL2 Sturmovik Great Battles was installed in Programme Files (x86); I have reinstalled it in the root of my C drive, ie C:\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles, and we are up and running.

I am just trying it on the laptop too.

Not sure why this stopped the full game from launching but....looks like it is fixed!

Glad you got it working. I think the UAC in the program files folder  has blocked some critical file when DL-ing and that wasn´t present when you first moved the game. now with a reinstall you got all the needed files and TADA, off you go! Fly safe and check six!

Thank you FlyingH

I think you may be right; I did a clean install of Windows on my laptop, and installed IL2 first - no issues at all. I am currently installing other apps and utilities and so far, no issues have emerged.

I have edited the title to solved - although this is an amateur work around.

  • if possible install IL2 on a clean OS install then work out what apps conflict with it by reinstalling them one by one
  • try installing IL2 in the C Drive root instead of Programmes(x86)

As I have said - the lack of replies/solutions indicates this isnt a common issue and that is a good thing!
