catchthefoxes Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 I'm still a noob at flying the P 47 so there are certain things I still don't know how to do. Can someone explains to me how I'm supposed to start up and take off the P 47 in cold weather? I keep getting the "first engine oil system failure"every time I slowly increase the throttle when I'm about to take off, I'm obviously missing something. whats the correct way to fly it? thanks in advance!!?

Haven't flown in winter weather yet so not sure if it will happen to me but the only thing I can think of is the engine temps, is engine fully warmed up and all gauges reading good (oil pressure, temps, etc.) Not sure why the oil system would just fail all of the sudden, I'll run some test later today and see if I get the same problem.
[APAF]VR_Spartan85 Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 Make sure you have ‘engine warm’ in difficulty settings. It may be cold start literally.. so you may be hurting the engine
Praetor Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 Your oil is like mud if your engine is cold. Let it warm up first.

Very hard to do ingame with how engine and oil temps are modelled especially when on the ground where in reality fighters would boil over if they were idling too long, ingame it never seems to happen it also doesn't help we don't have the option do dilute oil which is something that absolutely would be done in cold weather.
Sgt_Joch Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 (edited) I have flown QMBs in winter. Do you have the option"warmed up engine" ticked on? If yes, take off normally. If not, make sure it is on. ? Edited November 23, 2018 by Sgt_Joch
Art-J Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 (edited) Whoa, so one can actually damage the engine from too low temps in this sim, huh? I thought that wasn't the case, as I've never had it happen even though I don't use "warmed up" option. I stopped bothering with warmups as they didn't make any dfference anyway. Then again, I only own BoK, and ambient temps on Kuban map are never really low it seems. Good to know that before Ardennes map arrives! Edited November 23, 2018 by Art-J
danielprates Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 (edited) Happens with the A20 too, in my experience. And even with the engines close to their correct operational temperature, it still pays to be easy on the throttle during take off, slowly bringing it to max throttle. Yes, it's been that way since ROF. It is to simulate the preflight checks the ground crew would conduct before handing the plane over to the pilot.
Haza Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 (edited) I guess when the Po-2 turns up, we might see the aircraft on the winter maps with fires under the engine to keep the oil from freezing. If anybody is interested in this topic regarding engines, if you read up on the Japanese Navy submarine flying aircraft, it is amazing how they got around the whole issue of cold engines! I have attached a video I believe that discusses this issue, just from a pure point of interest! Regards Edited November 25, 2018 by Haza
