Can't see the wood for the trees

I'm just wondering if anybody here has solved a little (potentially huge?) challenge I've encountered when tinkering with making mods.

I may be mis-remembering the way things worked in Rise of Flight regarding tree placement, or it might be that things have changed in the newer game engine but I can't find the files needed to add/remove/change the placement of trees/forest.

Based upon hunches derived from file names/types in IL2 I've tried all sort of experiments with editing the map texture tiles and the alpha channels on these to no avail in terms of the addition of trees

I know it was never easy to place single trees exactly in ROF but I thought there was the option to edit some sort or larger more global forest map? However if this is still the case I can't find the equivalent within the newer IL2 game engine.

Anybody cracked this deep into game engine yet?

Hiya HH!

I haven't messed with maps/trees in BoX at all, but I did have to get a little deep into the tree issues with RoF when I did my mod to get rid of the jaggy forest zig-zags along the trench lines on the western front map - you might want to take a look at that thread (and some of the other threads mentioned in it) for some discussion of how playing around with forests/trees worked in RoF:

Panther cheers for that,

I'm not sure whether there's anything in there that's going to be useful but I'll pick through it and see if it's still relevant in terms of the newer game engine.

It's fairly clear that the file I need to access and modify is the forest_map.wtr file but as to what type of file a WTR file is or the software needed to make sense of this I don't know.

I guess it is some sort of graphics file specific to  the digital warfare engine  which may make finding a software to open and edit it difficult, as so far the only way I've been able to open this is as an endlessly long list of meaningless hexadecimal characters

Thanks

HH
