Community Q&A with IL-2 Discord Community's milopugdog

Hey folks,

I thought this might be of particular interest to the community here. I've done a Q&A with milopugdog who you may recognize the name as the person responsible for the unofficial IL-2: Great Battles community Discord. It's a growing community of IL-2 fans and the Discord has been used to help find wingmates for multiplayer matches, people to join squads, and for some new players to get started on the series.

The hope of course is that we'll get more people using tools like Discord (or TeamSpeak) to coordinate their multiplayer activities and in the process connect with interesting folks.

Read it here: https://stormbirds.blog/2018/11/09/community-qa-milopugdog-from-the-il-2-community-discord/

I'm also on the lookout for suggestions on other community members that are doing things like running interesting multiplayer scenarios, creating campaigns and missions, or otherwise generating some interesting materials for the IL-2 series. Send me a note here or on a PM if you think of something!

I won't have anything to do with Discord; not going to touch it with a barge-pole.  Sticking with TeamSpeak and a big thumbs up.

Happy landings,

Why's that? Discord has far more functionality than TeamSpeak. We use both, but Discord also acts as a squad (and guests) forum.

whenever I browse this discord server "il2 great battles" there's never anyone on the actual voice comms. It's a social platform site primarily for message posting, voice comms second (if at all). TS is all about voice, hence less garbage to sift thru. However, Coconut discord is far better, people actually use squad voice rooms there.

honestly, the game desperately needs voice support internally per MP server. All of these external apps are crutches. I fly in VR and having external client for voicecoms is a tedious affair, very tedious.

Discord eats bandwidth in my experience, probably because of the increased functionality.  For people on slower/rural connections like myself, Discord can take enough bandwidth to negatively affect latency, especially at peak hours.

Read the small print involved with using Discord. They are just data-mining essentially. It gets odd the deeper you go... if interested look into the people who started it. And I'll just leave it at that.

Literally every single product you use that you aren't paying for is datamining you. Do you think google is running that company on good will? These guys here think TS isn't stealing your information for some reason, even though it's been free for years. If you really are that worried about your privacy stick to ventrillo. A service that actually costs money to host. Again any free software you are using is stealing your information and selling it. That's just the world we live in today. You can try to minimize it as much as possible but I'll take discords much nicer software over the absolute trash that is Teamspeak. I've hated teamspeak for 15 years. Even back in the day it was total crap. Not much has changed. It's got a terrible user interface and has some of the worst voice quality I've ever heard. Skype puts it to shame and skype is hot garbage.

If anyone wants to step into 2018 give discord a try you might be surprised.

No whisper. Without whisper, Discord becomes very limited for squad flying.

I hate whisper. I've always thought that there must be a better way to communicate between flights in a mission, whisper can be so off-putting when you are not the whisperer or whisperee (wonder if that's a real word...).

The Q&A itself wasn't explicitly about TeamSpeak versus Discord but rather highlighting some of the great work that people are doing around the community to help bring IL-2 players together. Discord CAN work brilliantly as a voice comms system (I use it that way all the time) but I do know it has limits too.

On the subject of radio comms and having experienced how immersive SRS is for DCS World I'd be very interested to see if that kind of thing would be in IL-2's future. I have no idea how SRS came about or how it was so well integrated with the in cockpit experience but I'd be interested in an IL-2 implementation IF players were interested and servers supported it. I sadly don't have the expertise to make the dream happen but I'll throw it out there.

You are probably doing it wrong. Whisper should not be for a person but a channel so everyone can hear the incoming com. Even if it is not perfect, it certainly beats 10 players in the same channel ...

That's exactly what I don't like. A whisper coming in disrupts any conversation or instructions within your own flight. Just as you are issuing a navigation change, engine setting details or a warning that a bunch of greedy 109s are hammering down on our tails! Using the chatbox instead of whisper would be much better - if you could keep all the nonsensical stuff away from it.

I wouldn't go as far as saying squad flying, rather organized events which rely on whispers.

It also depends how chatty individuals are, and of course if anyone is not using push to talk as you can then count both ends of their alimentary canal as inputs to the conversation, also the dog, wife, doors, TV...
